In my service center (not Korg) if there is a question of warranty we always contact the customer before any non-warranty work is done.

Our usual procedure is if you bring us a repair you are agreeing to our minimum 1 hour rate. If we can fix it for that, we don't call you. If however there is an expensive part, we call.

If the repair is going to exceed 1 hour we call.

Being that you have to open it to put the original SSD back in, you might as well look for loose cables. I would, as suggested by others, detach and reattach all cables that you might suspect to be causing the problem. You might get lucky.

I am confident in doing moderate work on my synths, however, as many have stated; you should not open up your synth if you still want the warranty. I would love to have a second hard drive and I know it is an easy job, but I will not do it until the warranty has expired.

I am so sorry your problem is with the display, because if it is not a loose cable issue, and Korg considers your warranty voided, then the service center would most certainly charge you. Replacement of the display would be a big dollar item and the service center would want its pound of flesh. I wish is was otherwise, but I do think they would charge you.

I wish you the best of luck with this problem. I will keep my fingers crossed for you. Maybe you will be able to get it sorted out.

I just now finally had a chance to open and inspect. All connections look and feel normal. Is there something specifically related to the screen I should pay attention to? Is the KLM-3007 the one that connects the screen to the motherboard? It seems normal, too, but to expose it entirely, I'll have to remove the disk. I'll have to remove the disk anyway if I take it in for servicing.

Also, I installed extra memory and I can't remember which memory stick is the original. One of my memory sticks is "SanMax Technologies" 2GB. The other one is Kingston KVR. It's shorter and hard to read the printing on the label. Which one is the stock RAM?

Did you completely unplug the cables and then plug it back in. That is what you need to do. Sometimes it looks like the cable is attached just fine, but it is actually not completely seated in the socket. Did you push down on the cable where they go into the socket to make sure they are fully contacting the connection.

In the service manual they list the memory module as:

DIMM SMD-2G88HP-BE
SO-DIMM SMC N2G68H1P-13H

Wishing you the best.

Thanks. I checked the seating of the cables as best I could without acutally unplugging each one. I'm hesitant to go yanking each of these delicate ribbon cables. Everything looks and feels just fine.

As for the memory, that service manual info specifies the required type, but I'm trying to figure out which of the two slots contains the DIMM actually installed at the factory. Both of mine are the correct type, but I installed one myself and can't remember which it is. Since this is a different kind of question, I'll post it in a new thread.

Fitting the cables back correctly, so that they are seated properly and not crimped between other parts, is one of the challenges when closing up the KRONOS after working on its internals. This is one of the many reasons that I personally discourage user service of the KRONOS. If the user has replaced the SSD themselves, it seems quite possible that an error when closing up the instrument was the cause of the problem with the screen.

Still, it worked fine for seven months after the user replaced the SSD.

The service center said it was indeed a defective screen. When they swapped in a new one, it worked fine. I have the original defective part in case I ever want to do any experiments with it.
