I've always formated my USB drives in Windows Explorer and it's always worked.

Please add yours, I will modify the list (all are FAT32). If possible, give a link to a picture to confirm which model you are reporting as some manufacturers use the same name to describe different models. Thanks.

The implication of this is that there would be some *incompatible* USB storage devices. That's always possible I suppose, but given the nature of USB it would be somewhat surprising.

As stated in another thread, our guess at this time is that problems with USB storage devices are related to file system errors, and should be fixed by re-formatting the device.

If anyone has a USB storage device that is currently being problematic with the KRONOS, and would be willing to part with it for a period of testing, please contact me at the email in my signature below.

If you *don't* want to part with it, I would encourage you to try a full format of the device on the KRONOS or on a Mac.

Windows users: there have been some questions raised in these threads about Windows and formatting. I do not have any experience with this, but it might be useful to try a dedicated utility such as the free "MiniAide Fat32 Formatter" (recommended by Cnet; I haven't tried it myself).

As discussed I have reformatted the Transcend I'm sending you multiple times and the Kronos does not recognise it...........

Yet I got it to work with a SanDisk Cruzer Glide 32GB after reformatting it a number of times.

Not sure but I think it was me rather than the USB. (Poet & I did know it, that's why I wrote it)

Yes a FULL format in the Kronos has ALWAYS worked for me.

I didn't try a full format, just quick format on the PNY (which didn't work). 3rd time, with an older USB stick, was the charm.

Sandisk 16 gig - Fail
PNY 8 gig - Fail
HP 8 gig - Successful. (No formatting necessary.)

Again, I have a bunch of these drives around and didn't get around to full formatting, but that would have been my next step.

I've read before about USB sticks sometimes containing hidden partitions to store additional software (compression, encryption, sometimes special drivers, etc. ) and this can cause problems with embedded devices being able to read them.

This gave me an idea: I just played around a bit with an old USB stick of mine to go beyond pure and idle speculation...

If there is no partition table on the stick and the FAT32 spans the whole raw device, the stick is recognised perfectly fine. If there is a partition table with only one FAT32 partition, the stick is recognised as well. But if there is a partition table with multiple FAT32 partitions, then only the first partition is recognised by the Kronos.

So, if the USB stick contains two FAT32 partitions of which the first one is a hidden partition that won't be shown under Windows, then the data unzipped under Windows may actually end up on the second FAT32 partition -- which is not recognised by the Kronos.

However, since the Kronos does recognise hidden FAT32 partitions perfectly fine, their contents should show up when attempting to load from them in Global mode. So, it should be pretty easy to verify whether a given USB stick contains a hidden first partition.

Edit: And in this case, formatting the USB stick on the Kronos won't help, as it formats the first, hidden partition which will remain hidden under Windows...

OK, here's an update. Kingmax U202G (2GB) and U204G (4GB) Super Stick Mini, but I don't think they are made any more. Kingmax only show a 32GB version and I don't know about them.

Also use a Kingston DT101 G2 but only for backup. Never used it for loading the OS.

I had no luck using Fat 32 format from my older mac (10.3.8 OS) on my Emtek USB stick.

The Kronos would not read the 2.1 files with that formatted USB stick ( Emtek).

I had to use the Kronos Disc Utility to Fat32 format my Emtek USB stick.

After I did that , my Kronos saw the 2.1 updater files. Update complete and successful.

The Emtek USB stick was brand new.

The answer seems to be that you need to format the memory stick in the Kronos and then it will work...........done that now with two sticks and both now work to update with.
