So you can call it up by just the SOUND or as a PERFORMANCE and hence save it as STS (and in SONGBOOK)
Provided CCs are enabled (send & receive) you can still operate volume control on the PA3X to control the external sound module/keyboard

I mostly use reverse, I control PA600 with external controller :)

Cool.

My main application for this is to enable me to play my Kronos sounds as UPPER1 in style play mode. I use the Kronos CX3 a lot and so this set up is ideal especially as the PA3X organs are not the best....

Also I switch the PA3X to SOUND play mode (using the "no-sound") and then I have a "76-note Kronos".

Cheers

some day if I got Kronos, I maybe use Korg pa to control Kronos, but now my best machine is PA600. 8)
Also got cheap Yamaha (no midi in/out), and 2 midi controllers.
I'm not to good to changing sounds(clicking on board), while I'm playing, prefer use other keyboard to control one of my Uppers sound :D

I think a lot depends on what the external sound you want to use is... Yes, a simple monophonic solo sound is going to use one or two voices of internal 'muted' polyphony. Probably not anything that would disrupt the accompaniment.

But perhaps a piano sound (something a lot of us use VSTi's for), with the arranger in Whole Mode, Pianostyle, and heavy sustain and sostenuto playing, big arpeggios etc. might definitely put a bite into the available polyphony of the Korg by using voices up on oscillators that never make a sound...

The solution offered works under certain circumstances, but may present issues in others. I'm just trying to point this out, and to perhaps suggest that, while you are using the workaround, you try to get Korg to address the issue in a less kludgy way. More than one 'Global' MIDI set, linkable to the Songbook strikes me as a good way to go about it.

First of all: I have very limited understanding of MIDI, but basic concepts.

I tried MIDI connection:
PA3X as master keyboard, MIDI out to an external sound module, Upper 1 ON (Upper 2 and 3 MUTE).
In order to have the external module sound ONLY, as for your suggestions, I created a "service sound" with oscillators leve 0, and called that new sound "SILENT".
When I play on the PA3x, the module sounds ok, and recognizes also the VELOCITY.
OK

My problem is:
operating the EXPRESSION PEDAL (connected to PA3X, regularly working on the internal sounds of PA3X), the external module DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THE EXPRESSION CONTROL (volume variations).

How could I activate the MIDI transmission of the expression pedal?

Thank you!

No-volume sound

Post by MadrasGiaguari »

Dear Pete,

I incidentally discovered a Pa3x function that does not make necessary the No-Volume sound.

I'm using this function to control an Hammond external module (beautiful) XM2+Xm2c drawbars unit.

The setup I organized is to let Pa3x keyboard interact in this way (Style Play mode):
-Upper 1: Pa3x sound (say: Sax)
-Upper 2: Pa3x sound (say: Digital Piano)
-Upper 3: Hammond (upper keyboard)
-Lower: Hammond (lower keyboard)

You can on/mute each track without problems. But need additional set:

GLOBAL/MIDI:
Midi out channels:
-Ch 1: off
-Ch 2: off
-Ch 3: Upper 3
-Ch 4: Lower

Midi out filters:
-SysExcl
-Program change

On the Hammond module, of course I set the Midi-in this way:
-Upper manual: ch3
-Lower manual: ch4

Save this Midi set in Global/Midi, as "Hammond".

STYLE PALY MODE:

Menu/Preferences/Style setup/Midi setup: choose "Hammond"

Menu/Track controls (equivalent of the no-volume sound):
-Upper 1: Internal (play the sax)
-Upper 2: Internal (play the dig.piano only)
-Upper 3: EXTERNAL (play the upper manual of the Hammond)
-Lower: EXTERNAL (play the lower manual of the hammond)

Menu/keyboard ensemble/KbdCntr1/Expression:
-Up1: no
-Up2: no
-Up3: yes
-Low: yes
This way, your expression pedal will control the Hammond external module only; while the sax and/or the piano sounds will not be affected by the expression pedal (fantastic!)

You will probably need to adjust the tune of Lower, 1 octave higher (it depends by the settings on the external module)

Save all the above StylePlayMode settings in a PERFORMANCE:
every time you will call that Performance, you will be fully ready to play independently the Upper 1 and 2 with the Pa3 x sounds, and Upper 1+Lower with the Hammond sounds.

The accompaniment tracks are not influenced at all by those settings. Therefore you will have your usual accompaniment.

Expression pedal, of course, is a must! (not only for Hammond sounds: I also use it for strings and analog pads).

Ciao

What if you set your 'no sound' OSC to the EMPTY sample?

Dear Thoraldus,

you don't need the Empty system. Pa3x already has the function to switch Internal/External sounds, as described earlier:

Menu/Track controls (equivalent of the no-volume sound):
-Upper 1: Internal (play the sax)
-Upper 2: Internal (play the dig.piano only)
-Upper 3: EXTERNAL (play the upper manual of the Hammond)
-Lower: EXTERNAL (play the lower manual of the hammond)

I still have another problem with MIDI SETUP.

Most of my Styles/Performances are designed to play internal sound only, without the use of the external Hammond module.
To do that I set in Style Preferences the Midi Set 1, that does not send the midi out required by the Hammond module (Ch 3 for Upper3 and Ch4 for Lower).
This way the Hammond module keep silent. And I can freely Play/Mute my 4 Tracks using the Pa3x sounds only.

On the other hand, I made some performances to still play Upper 1 and 2 with Internal Pa3x sounds, and Upper 3 (for upper Hammond manual) and Lower (for lower Hammond manual) with the external Hammond module sounds, as described in my previous post.

The left over problem is that I cannot have different MIDI SETUP joined to individual Styles/performance.
Of course, in StylePlay mode, Style Preferences, when I want to get the Hammond sounds I select another MidiSetup, that I called "Hammond", that sends the correct Midi out channels to play the Hammond module.
And I also went in Global/Lock and unchecked the box of Syle Preferences, to let the individual styles to have different Midi Setup.

But it does not work: when I change from one style to another he still keep the previous Midi setup, and does not apply the (different) Midi setup that I had recorded in Style Preference.

Is there a solution to join a Midi Setuo to a style/performance? Or, where I do make a mistake?

Thank you

Hello,

MIDI setup is stored in the global settings. It's not part of a performance, style or STS, so I don't see any chance to get it modified without going in the Global menu.
