Most of them claim to be "neutral" and "revealing" and to let you hear things that were previously hidden. That's why it's so important to listen for yourself and to bring varied tracks of your own work and some CDs you know well.
If there is no option to do that, you'll only end up with a list of speakers other people bought and most often they will recommend them. How many of us have truly been mixing on a professional level and been trying out the dozens of options in a well treated room over years? Some general advice on cone size can help but I would honestly take my BM5As over some generic 8 inch woofer based speaker. Not to mention room interaction, music style and bass port location (or the fact that bass porting isn't even the best solution for good low end).
Studiomonitors? which ones?

If you don't mind waiting a bit, they occasionally run this setup on sale for $399. They'll most likely be doing a black friday deal for it.

That's really nice. They got a pretty good review as well. I think I'll look at those closely before buying my next monitors.

Yea - if you have the funds to step up to the D8s, there's actually a port on the back that lets you configure the DSP for your room on your PC. I have open space behind mine (my desk is in front of a 1/2 wall with steps underneath). The angled pads it comes with lets me put them up high on the 2nd tier and aim the tweeters right in a perfect triangle, too. I'm no expert on mixing, but I enjoy them much more than I did the BX8s (which are below - used as a 2nd reference pair).slowtrain wrote:jeebustrain wrote:I have a pair of Equator D5s that are fantastic for critical listening. I bought a pair of Rokit 8 and found them very good for a range of uses and am amazed at their performance across the audio range.dspellman wrote:I'm using KRK Rokit 8's.
Note that these are for playing through and not as a recording mixdown monitor system. Room is small, with hard walls, no corner bass traps and the Korg is relatively close to the speakers.
I *do* have the Rokits up on Ultimate Support MS-90 stands, which isolate the speakers from the floor well.
I've got them EQ'd relatively neutral for the room. Very acceptable and, I think, best bang for the buck.
Although I would agree keep the off the floor for clearer bass.

I'm going to throw a wrench into this whole discussion by saying that I use a pair of Edirol MA-15D's. I bought themn for $100 at a clearence sale. They have a 4 1/2 inch woofer and a 1 inch tweeter. They're self powered but I honestly have no idea what the power rating is.
I have them sitting on shelves mounted to the wall behind my desk. They are sitting on top of 1 1/2 inch convoluted foam which is laminated to 1/2 inch etha foam laminated to 1/2 polyester foam. This way I get isolation from the shelf. Behind the speakers on the wall I have an 18 by 30 inch slab of convoluted polyester foam to help disperse close standing waves.
My studio room is 9 feet by 11 feet so it's basically a bad box.
The speakers are basically cheap and with the room treatments I get what I feel is effing amazing sound!
I also use an old pair of Audio technica headphones.
I genereally mix at a low level.
Here is an example of what I get from my studio. Play it loud but watch out for the bass drum.

Let me know what you think. It was done on my Kronos, except for the real acoustic guitar.
