If you want nearfields for a realistic neutral sound:
In the lower price range, the above mentioned Yamaha HS80 seem to have the best price/value relation to me.
If you go slightly beyond your price tag and want nearfields with an absoulutely neutral sound, just delivering what's there for a perfect mix, I highly recommend the Neumann KH 120 A:

To me they are about the best you can get in the ~1000 bucks price range per pair.
Else Sander is right that the room is an essential part of the sound.
