It should be a given that a product with the same name released a decade after the last is at least a big leap forwards.

If you'd install Windows 10 you don't expect Windows ME behaviour. You expect an upgrade.

All in all it boils down to how you perceive the name. Many including me think about an updated version when they see the Electribe 2 name. Hence the 2. If Korg didn't plan this to be an updated Electribe they shouldn't have called it the Electribe 2 but something else, or maybe Electribe -2.

Guess it all boils down to what a person perceives as upgrades/downgrades/sideways moves. And the E2 has plenty of all the above. And exactly how many of each depends on how the user perceives it. Simple as...

It is called Electribe 2. The 2 implies a 2nd version, also a new version of the same model is normally greeted with improvements without removing old features.

Anyways, this debate is going in circles. The fans will never admit the E2 is not an upgrade from the originals. It is at most a backwards side step. It is not an upgrade from the original models.

I wish they would've called it something else. Kaos Pad Pro.

Doesn't Bother me! This is my first Groovebox and for what it cost it's provided me wish A LOT of fun- I'm Not claiming it's Faultless, there are things about it that I find frustrating (Copy Part- but only to the same pattern is a biggy for me).
For me it's doing EXACTLY what I wanted it for, creating music WITHOUT A COMPUTER!!!!
Its an intuitive interface(IMHO) that's capable of creating a fantastic range of sounds without a MASSIVE Learning curve.
Above all Its FUN!

The synth engine is vastly improved, it is more streamlined and portable - a direct upgrade to some.

I am 100% guilty of calling it the Electribe 2, but i'm looking at mine right now and it just says "Electribe". Not Electribe 2. From now on, i shall call mine "The Grey Electribe".

I'm remembering the Sonic State review - Korg rep brought in previous versions to link these models to the legacy of whole range. Even Nick B looked puzzled by that - but, hey they did it first.

New versions of things routinely remove old features. "Feature Bloat" is the term for not streamlining and pruning.

A new electribe that did everything the old one did would require all the buttons and knobs that came before, plus all the new ones, such as the x/y pad. Plus all the combined I/O. And a much bigger OS, a huge manual, a high learning curve, and a confusing interface.

It would be twice the size and twice the price. That might be your dream gear, but by 2030 the latest electribe would be the size of a kitchen table and cost 10 thousand dollars.

By 2050, the electribe will consume all the power resources of the International Provisional Emergency Energy Alliance, which SHOULD be using the limited power to cool the survival caves on the eastern seaboard of the US.

I love my new electribe. I have lots of fun with it. I write a new pattern every few days. It's satisfying to create sounds and quickly assemble an idea into a little mute/unmute performance.

It's not perfect. I wish it had a few more tricks, wish the delays were longer and effects had a Shift function. Wish the anti-aliasing wasn't so steep on the filter resonance. But it sure sounds better than the EMX/ESX series. Much more clarity and punch.

So I don't have any major complaints about it. Not about the workflow or sequencing, which seems to be the big sticking point with the naysayers. They don't seem to care it sounds better and is more advanced and refined socially.

I don't agree that Korg is screwing its customers. I think they're making awesome, affordable gear and putting it into the hands of a lot of people.

But then again, I could be wrong. I don't have 10 years experience on computers. That's an incredible achievement! Just think: In 5 more years, you'll be able to print out a certificate that says "15 Years Computers" and hang it above your vintage analog mixing desk in your successful commercial studio.
