I think that's the crux of it... the Motif has its own synthesis engine, and for VA or FM functionality, you actually had to add the necessary hardware to support it (when Yamaha did support expansion cards in the Motif series). The hardware for their "older innovative synths" simply doesn't exist in the Motif. Korg's approach is different, essentially running "soft synths" on their hardware base. They were the first to do this, but maybe Yamaha will develop "soft synth" versions of their older synths for future workstations as well.l8rdood wrote:"Vlad_77 wrote: I t does make me curious though as to why Yamaha didn't integrate their older innovative synths WITH the Motif series. It seems to me at least that at the time it would have been real gravy.
I agree totally! I have the motif ES rack & have both the AN & DX cards inside. Supposedly, the DX card "is" the brain of a DX-7.
Roland's and Yamaha's plans to surpass the Kronos?

I noticed under your "gear" at the bottom you have a virus T12. How much do you like that? For setup one, I have a Kronos 88 on the bottom, a Jupiter 80 in the middle & a Nord Lead 2X on the top. Set up 2 has a Triton Extreme 76 on bottom and the V-Synth GT on the top. I was looking at this post to see if Yamaha was going to replace their XF boards. I was thinking of getting the XF7 to replace the Triton. I haven't really thought of the virus as a replacement. Do you like it? FYI....I do have 3 analog keys on stand-by(minimmoog voyager, OB OB8 & a Juno 60). What's your thoughts....
My Gear- Korg Koronos 88, Korg Triton Extreme 76, Korg M1R, Korg R3, Korg Kaossilator(that's just the Korg stuff)Thanks for all your help!
kronos uses superb, un-looped stereo samples sampled at eight velocity levels for each and every key.
yammy has a very short samples .
Obviously looped.
- Samples are 3 to 1 seconds (lo to hi) with 1.5 to 0.5 seconds of crossfade.

The Virus TI2 is an utterly fantastic synth. Its a chameleon, capable of just about any synth texture, and very easy to edit and patch. Additionally, for a sound designer, its remarkably deep. What it is NOT however is an all purpose keyboard, like a Kronos or Motif sound ROMs or engines. You're not going to find acoustic orchestral or piano patches in there. However....for *synthesis*, you will be hard pressed to do better than Virus.l8rdood wrote:I noticed under your "gear" at the bottom you have a virus T12. How much do you like that?
