It never ends!

Just did a whole round of Vista vs Mac OSX debates, and there are links to them on my blog: http://fredtime.com.

Basically, Vista is too new to risk upgrading to at this point. Drivers are still crashing... I tried using the MOTU Vista drivers with my PCI-424 card and KABOOM: the blue screen of death!!!

It will take a very long time before, as Sharp says: "Eventually everything will be Vista compatible only." Microsoft has really confused the market by offering 6 different versions of Vista, and I think they have priced it too high. It could be years before even half the XP users have upgraded, and that will keep developers from making Vista-only software... they would lose too many sales.

Despite all that, as I mentioned in the videocast that is linked to on my blog, I will say that Vista has a much better audio engine than XP. Right now there isn't any "killer audio app" that requires it... but if some company comes out with one, then maybe it would be worth upgrading.

So, stick with XP if you are a Windoze user. If you are a Mac user, you can actually install Vista on your Mac, but I wouldn;t recommend that either! All you need to do is wait for OSX Leopard

ASIO circumvents the entire XP Kernel, and is the broadly accepted standard so far on PCs.

Just wondered if Microsoft is kinda killing itself by introducing so many versions & upgrades of Vista just to confuse people until they don't know what to buy and literally giving up in getting one or indirectly encourge people switching to Mac instead?

I'm not upgrading.

1) Vista is expensive. The full version is US$ 400.

2) Changing an OS is expensive. Thinking in a positive way, at least 30% of your hardware will stop working once you upgrade.

3) Vista is too new to be safe. The first people moving into Vista will pay the price for being early adopters.

4) My current setup works.

5) have you heard about Digital Rights Management ? That thing is scary.

Basically you aren't the owner of the contents in your computer anymore. Someone else is, and the news is that you will be paying for it, in the guise of cpu cycles and degraded media quality.

Just wondering if I had to purchase another PC, and the stock OS is Vista, can I install any version of XP-OS on top of it?
Before the "Mac Attack" insues let me also inform you that I am heavily invested with Cakewalk Sonar [current version 6.2] Producer Version. As well as Waves Native. XP is doing great for us [21 tracks simultaneous recording with no hiccups]
Of course my next machine will probably spec'd from scratch where XP will be the OS of choice.
Any suggestions?

I was forced to rebuild my computer this fall (old one Motherboard died). In the process instead of using my older 32 bit XP I upgraded and purchased 64 bit xp pro. I did this because once Vista was officially launched; finding an older version of XP on the market will be tough. Because Microsoft will no longer produce it.

And thus far I am happy with my choices.. XP 64 bit actually is much more stable than my 32 bit version ever was. And on my 64 bit applications runs much faster. And this saves me from any headache purchasing a Vista for the next couple of years. Which will give them more time to work out bugs, etc.. The only difficulties I have had were with specific equipment peripheral drivers.. but after contacting the manufacturers of those peripherals, I have since received 64 bit drivers that work fine.

XP works great.

It's extremely stable, all my programs work great on XP. No reason to switch to something else, whether it's vista, Os X or something else.

My philosophy is simple: if you already have a setup that works great and does everything you want it to do - don't experiment.
