Maybe you need an amp with more gain. My K61 is plugged straight into a plain old amp, no preamp, and I rarely set the volume above 9 o'clock. Never had any distortion except for programs that have distortion as an effect.

This is quite handy for me to use the volume knob this way, in performance especially. Distortion is especially appearent in piano sounds and while playing in forte. I read there are some issues about piano samples. But only few people were mentioning about this. I have checked this with headphones pluged directly to Kronos and in different venues and in my studio all the same. Patches are not peaking as well, checked it. Quite annoying problem and effects my comfort of playing. I don't have any problem with my Roland fantom keyboard under same circumstances.

It is a very stupid issue with this 3000 pound device, I would consider such a device faulty. Is there anyone has a solution for this or who knows the what cause this?
am I missing something?... aren't you SUPPOSED to get distortion when you turn the source to max level?

I adjusted the output to 36 DB and have had no issues, seems 48 is too high
for multi track compositions but is fine with one instrument only.
Sounded like overloading digital outputs at 48 DB with 16 tracks playing.

At 36 DB there is no spurious anomalies.
Headroom on older analog gear could take maximum saturation, but digital sounds harsh if overloaded even a little. My music sounded much clearer now with the 36 DB settings, make sure to write all in global to keep this setting.

I know this may sound incredibly simple, but it's worth a try.

REBOOT. I was recording the other day and loaded some akai samples and got random distortion playing the keys. It was inexplicable. The Kronos had been on for a good while at least a few days. Rebooted, and reloaded the samples. Problem gone and was able to record!

When the Kronos has been on for awhile and just starts doing stuff that's funky with no explanation, save your work and reboot. I've had 2 or 3 moments of "funkyness" (the not cool kind) since last year and this solved the problem each time.

Good luck!
