The OS loads the OS
The "res" resets the entire keyboard.

I have a serious latency issue when I've been up until 4am grooving on this magnificent keyboard - but it has nothing to do with the keyboard!!!

So - this topic all solved then ?????

Think that the old Korg I5 arranger with its very old and slow memories and processor doesn't have latencies, sounds strange no? On my blog I put some demos about my second arranger, a Technics KN2000. It use a NEC V53 CPU that in speed and memory addressing performs as a 286 CPU, it has also a memory controller glue logic this mean an auxiliar IC acting as a northbridge in the same way as a PC motherboard. The most beautiful about this arranger is the no latencies issues, it responds very quickly to the events (front panel and keybed) without delays/ drop of notes and dynamic range/sound quality outperforms Korg Pa500 factory sounding quality.
But again is the memory speed guilty at all !!!!, we need to re design it please because is affecting all keyboards and samplers !!!!
Don´t use flash devices for sampling, there are to slow !!!! Is much better a battery and RAMs continuously powered !!! and samples compression tools in the same way as in the old PCs ....

Think about Yamaha Motif XF /Tyros 4 with its 10 year anniversary and 2gb sampling capabilities using flash devices, yes flash devices for user sampling area and no need of a backup battery... DAW realtime panel interface and digital audio with effects !!! 100% PC digital integration and 738MB of excellent ROM sounds data. There are all happy with its Motifs/Tyros 4 and not complaining about OS latencies.....

Ah!! See you didn't read my message clearly:-

What I meant was...
PA3X-76 - no latency
M3-61 - no latency

but don't worry - the latency I am referring to is purely between my brain and my fingers :beer (just a little light-hearted humour)

Hi. it's me again.. Antony - The samples are there on the res file. Confirmed that today. I've been able to open the res file as raw audio in an audio editor. Of course it will have very "white noise" but if we pay attention we can hear the multisamples playing mixed on that noise.... I guess they are all encoded for protection. If you don't believe try to do that, and listening carefully at about 6 minutes forward. If you can't ill send instruction in private of what software used to open and what definitions . So to me it's "crystal clear" that pa3x CAN LOAD THE INTERNAL SAMPLES.

WHY SPEND SO MUCH OF TME, Instead of making a Progrm than so we can make the edits from PC/MAC, This is insane, Why so much zeros and ones here, but nothing else!

The can make the sounds better whit a program , that bulks the set to 3 X, They promises so much and , they don,t give a S.xxx!

Look at Other products from KORG, they heave a great library of program and much much more,

Al thispromissses in years from KORG,

Even my phone heave 16 gb of ram, Comooon. 256 in RAM is Crap, compress my sounds is not 512 MB!

The res files contains the waveform data, and these are preloaded into RAM during keyboard startup. This is true for Pa2x and Pa3x. in Pa3x they added a backup battery to keep these waveform data in RAM when the keyboard is switched off to reduce startup time.
Note also that since the CPUs used on both models are similar (the Pa3x seems to be faster) I suspect these can address a maximum of 512MB of RAM (256MB for the factory data and 256MB for the user data when the expansion memory is installed. Since Pa3x CPU is faster, it can handle compressed data, so they could store more sampled data in the 256MB factory area and let the user compress his own samples.
Having a suitable knowledge of res file structure one could replace all samples and let the keyboard load and use them.

So yes, Korg could upgrade all keyboard samples but here are at least two reasons they can't do it.

1) compatibility with previous models: to be able to load older models' styles, sounds, performances, and let them sound good, you HAVE to keep most part of old samples. On Pa3x they were able to give us new sounds by using a faster processor and compressing old sounds to make space for new wave data and carefully replacing the ones that do not interfere too much with older resources.
2) money: Korg get his income selling keyboards, and part of this money goes to engineers that work creaing good sounds and samples. If they simply upgraded Pa2x with new sounds, Korg would not get money from selling new keyboards and would not be able to pay them.

I don't know what the Pa4x will be, but I think the current design reached the limits and can't be pushed further. I hope Pa4x will be based on Kronos design, this would open a lot of possibilities and fun! :)

No one of us claimed that Raw sound data are not included in Res file ,but the reason
is apparently different from writing internal waveforms , at least for Pa2X !
I wrote my Knowledge about Rom writing possibilities since only Macronix has recently
made very fast photographic mask layer electrically erased Rom memories that no keyboard
or commercial equipment has used them yet since they are very expensive !
When I'll get Pa3X service manual we will discuss it further , since then my observations
will remain on Pa2X !
mrdave68 wrote: the Res waveform data, and these are preloaded into RAM during keyboard start-up. This is true for Pa2x and Pa3x
Totally inaccurate ! Factory waveforms are not preloaded to Ram for any of Pa2X - Pa3X
You can easily discover it when un-pluging Ram module , Factory data are intact !
Only user's samples are pre-loaded to Ram !
Though (as I mentioned) I don't own Pa3X service manual yet , I can ensure you that Pa2X motherboard
Rom chips can't be written so there is no potential to change there even a single waveform !
Also If that could be happened in Pa3X which I surely doubt , there is no compatibility issue when
improving a waveform at particular place & adding new ones at the end of index , same as we do in MS list !
But no Pa3x waveform change has happened until now (OPS 1.5)

If somebody owns Pa3X service manual could help us to avoid speculations about Pa3X factory memory structure !
