Thanks guys for the support and nice words :)

I've got quite a few emails from people if i could show some of the upcomming combis in a demo. Now i have some demos on my channel that are in that sound library, although you have to keep in mind that these are demos from almost a year old, so the final versions sounds really better with a much better mix. But i've decided to post them anyway to give you guys a glimps of what kind of combis you can expect as the first new sound library.

First of all, this combi will be free for everyone because it's based on one of my own soundsets. This will be released at the same time as the premium combi soundset.

Combi: Alpha Trance Waves (uses the sounds from the free analog hypnotic soundset)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqYw0aFNzr0

These kind of combis will be in the premium Library:
Combi: Neo Soul Piano (i'm a big fan of combis that follow whatever you play, as an arranger type of mode, this combi does just that. It follows whatever i'm playing)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I76v6UPRt6o

combi: Trance Awakening (also a trance like combi that follows what i'm playing. The sound effects are samples that are connected to specific notes as a demo how people can use their own samples to create fills)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3LftakET30

Combi: Enchanted Lake (my personal favorite combi, created more then a year ago, in the final set the mix is drastically changed into more punch in the sound)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbXU7UYa_ZY

Ambient dreams combi demo (created more than a year ago, so the combis do sound a lot better now in the final set)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_K6MW3KwV8

In the next few weeks i'm going to create some new combi demos based on how they sound now.

I hope this answers the emails i've got.

Qui, thanks for creating your site. I've been having a nose round the Kronos Documents and they are really well done (thanks to your friend).

I did purchase your Dream Pianos set and have one question:
Watching you demo video of Dream Pianos, the notes are all far more sustained than the purchased version but not fully sustained. Do you use a half-damper?

I only have a basic sustain pedal so I tend not to use it because it makes the pad sounds hang too long, so I've gone through the lot and set the piano release times to max.

Would you recommend getting a half-damper?

Hi Niblit,

the demo video was created live with that exact same soundset, but you are right, i do use a half damper pedal. I'm used to half damper pedal because i've learned it that way on a real piano, so i don't really know if i can recommend it, it takes some time to learn to play with it. But i use it with everything, even with the magical space and clouds demos, where i use the half pedal to smoothly transition between the sounds using SST and half pedal functionality

There are some standard playing tricks though for playing ambient piano when you don't have a half pedal, but just a switch. One that's really simple to do is to use the hold pedal, play your arpeggios in with your left hand and release the hold pedal every on every first beat of a measure you play with your melody. I'm using this technique in the first track (watermark from enya) of the dream pianos video, every time i play the melody i hold the hold pedal on the first beat to let it go at beat 4 of the measure. Now because every piano sound has a predefined sustain, that way chords changed blend smoothly into eachother.

But it's just like a real piano, when you play for instance C minor and then an A minor and then a G without releasing your hold pedal between the chords than things will get sound muddy. So try to think in chords when you play, you can hold the pedal as long as you stay in the same chord, but as soon as you change the chord, release the pedal and activate it again.

It can be a bit hard to learn in the beginning but with these simple to learn techniques you will have a lot of performance power in your hands. So even with a normal hold pedal you can achieve the sound in the demo video. It's all a matter of releasing and activating the hold pedal at the right moment.

But one thing that a half damper pedal will add to your playing style is that you can determine the amount of sustain of the note during play, but i have to be honest, it takes a lot of practice to make good use of the hold pedal.

I hope this helps you a little bit :)

ps. was there a specific part in the video where you had trouble with replicating the sound (i can check how i played that specific part if i know which sound you are referring to).

Thanks Qui, understand that I am no way a pianist. I just learned to play the basics following a marriage break up

I can only admire those people who can read music and play properly, because I have trouble playing anything decent using both hands, never mind my damn feet as well

I get by, and that's why I use the sequencer so much, but just want to say THANKS for all your support to old gits like me..

Cheers.

yes, the good old sequencer will help us musicians with everything, i wouldn't know what to do without cubase :D

But i can definitely recommend to take some time to practice playing with a hold pedal. When you are just beginning with playing the piano then i doubt that the investment in a damper pedal will bring you the results you expect from it.

Starting by using the hold pedal correctly will give you a much better influence on the song you are playing. Setting all the piano note releases to max is not really an advisable way to go in my opinion, because that way every note will sound very long and when you play a medium speed song the sound will get muddy.

So the first thing to try out is to disable / enable the hold pedal at every chord switch. If you got this right then you are halfway there. Just start trying to play by hitting chords every measure. As long as you hit the same chords you can hold the pedal, but you will notice that when you hit a different chord and you forget to hold the pedal that notes will conflict with eachother which results in an unpleasant 'release' sound. So try this as long as needed till you don't have to think about it and you achieved the muscle memory needed for your hands and feets (should be a matter of hours instead of days)

Now when you achieved that, then try to arpeggiate the chord over two octaves (or one) with the same pedal technique. You will notice that it still sound pleasant.

Then the last thing to do is to play a simple melody of the chords. As long as you play a melody in the root scale of the chord (so don't play things like the dorian scale for instance) then you can use the same hold pedal technique you've learned in the previous time.

Done,
within a few days you've learned the basics to playing ambient pieces. It's really fun to have these skills available for your own playing, then the fun really starts when you dive deeper into the possibilities of playing.

Now if you want to see when i change the hold pedal during play then watch my right leg in the video, every time i change the pedal you will see my leg move.

 HEY QUI, I DONE IT!
I followed the tutorial from your website (creating a string patch using PollySix).

Then I tweaked it a bit (A LOT) and messed about with AMS (that is such a cool tool). Sounded good so I set up Exi2 with a German Grand, plenty of reverb, plenty of sustain and mixed it all up...

DUDE, I've just created a monster :D
Can I have your email address please, cos I'd like your opinion.

I'll send it from my Mac (no bugs or viruses), maybe the odd crab :?

ACTUALLY NO, I got another idea...
I'll open a web shop and flog it 8)

Hehe GREAT,

The more sound designers the better it is :)

There are more tutorials in the document area that learns you how to create lead and bass sounds on the polysix, so i'm happy that those documents help you out understanding how to program the polysix.

These documents weren't created by me, but by another dutch guy named kris oosting who has allowed me to post those tutorials on the site for you all. I think they are really good handson tutorials.

Just downloaded the free stuff first.
Worked flawlessly.
I'll be chipping away until I have them all. Like I've just bought myself a new Kronos 'Q'

I have to say, this is a quality website and the 'sounds' are beautiful.

Thanks Q

Thanks guys :)

Actually this is a good tip, if you are unfamiliar with my sounds then first download the free soundsets, to check out my type of sounds.

I'm really happy to see that the tutorial area is also discovered by a lot of visitors. I'm working on a new tutorial at the moment where i explain how to create your own karma ge with the karmalab software. As i understood many people find this hard to do, but actually the basics aren't that hard if you know some simple to learn steps. So in the tutorial you will see how to create a midi pattern in cubase, then the steps needed to make a karma mw proof midi file, then the import process in the karma mw software and the steps needed to modify your own pattern to a new ge.

I so far have left karma alone. It slows me down and I'm not very technical . It's all about the sounds for me and the moods Q . Your giving me more colours for my pictures . Cheers mate :D
