I'm referring to the Pitch Shift function the DVP-1 had. Those effects do that with a live mic on the KRONOS? If so, I had no idea and I could legitimately dump my DVP-1.

I seriously have to put some time into this again but when I was playing with it way back when, I don't remember it being anywhere as effortless or the same functionality as the video I posted earlier:

Yes, they do that with a live mic, or any other signal - just like all of the other effects.

I just checked, It's exactly as I remembered it, too. :-) Once it's set up, in Program Mode it's almost as effortless as that video - but with more functionality. You do need to set things up first (think of it as building your PolySix): set Chord Mode to Basic or Advanced, and then map SW1 or SW2 to Chord Switch (leave the Chord Pad set to the default, 1). Then, go to the Pads page, and it's all there for you...

1. With Chord Switch off, hold the notes for the chord.
2. Press Chord Assign, and then press Pad 1.
3. Turn the Chord Switch on, and play.

Stuff that takes it beyond the original:
* the Program (or Combi) stores the chord(s), so you don't have to set them up live (unless you want to do so!)
* you can load up the 8 pads with different chords, and switch between them in real-time (USB pads will work the same as the on-screen pads, btw)
* store velocities for each note in a chord, which are then scaled by your real-time playing
* in Advanced mode, (now I'll quote the Parameter Guide) "use the Program’s Voice Assign parameters to create a variety of different effects, such as mono legato chords with fingered portamento, or poly chords that overlap one another. The Voice Assign settings apply as if the entire chord was a single note, with each pitch in the chord created by an additional transposed oscillator. Poly, Poly Legato, Single Trigger, Mono, Mono Legato, Mono “Mode,” Legato Offset, Mono Priority, and Mono and Poly Unison all apply."
* complex interactions between different Programs in a Combi, if desired (different chords, different on/off states etc.)

Hope this helps!

Danatkorg, out of curiosity if you voted, which 'engine' did you vote for?

Judging by the existing software, the Mono-Poly, even with imited polyphony in Kronos context, would be the most useful synth engine BY FAR for the Kronos from my view.

It would combine a warm analog-like vintage sound with a high degree of functionality, which the Polysix (which has my favorite synth sound flavor in the Kronos so far) can't deliver.

I would be ready to pay a high price (up to 200€) for a Mono-Poly on board of the Kronos anytime!

I'll give it a try. On the DVP-1, you set the pitch by pressing a key on the keyboard. Is it that simple using the effects or do you have to pre-set it in the patch?

Either way, looking forward to trying this out.

Jeesh, I feel like an idiot. Thanks a lot for your explanation as it has me seeing this completely different now. When I played with this before it just seemed so cumbersome and unnecessary but I legitimately get it. Can't wait to try this!

Thanks a ton Dan for your help and patience. MUCHO appreciated!

Don't forget it works for every engine, that includes CX-3 and HD-1 for ultra cheesy house organ chords ;)

This has been one of those things I've been complaining about since 2011 that I wanted to see fixed/added. I could have been using this feature all along.

Sorry Dan. Sorry Korg.

No worries - enjoy it!

There's a bunch of good info about this in the Operation Guide, under "Using the Chord Pads" and "Using Chord mode." It's just 3 and a half pages in total, hopefully well-worth your time!

I really just want to be able to load the factory M1 sounds into Kronos, there's already so much I have to learn on this incredible workstation. I passed on an M1 (and a Roland JD-800) in 1991 to buy an Ensoniq EPS 16+ Turbo, mostly due to lack of synth knowledge (the Ensoniq did serve me well for many years). I was really into making industrial music at the time, so I told the sales rep that sampling was important, and voila.

I always wanted to have an M1, but did have a good looped sample of Universe on floppy that I used (overused is more like it). It's insane what people are asking for used M1s on eBay. Right now a seller has one listed for $599 as a Buy It Now, but the synth looks like it has been attacked with a set of knives or set on fire. I suppose I could drop a few hundred on the M1R to have the sounds, but I love the physical build of the M1, so I keep shopping for the keyboard version.

Dan,

As far as the pitch shifter, can you make it work like the DVP-1 function where you hit a key on the keyboard and now everything is in that key or multiple keys?

The Pitch-Shift mode on the DVP-1 is monophonic, and doesn't respond to MIDI input. I think you're referring to the DVP-1's Harmonize mode; you're correct that this is not available in the KRONOS, and I agree that it would be a nice addition. Some PA series instruments do something similar with technology (and in at least some cases hardware, I believe) licensed from tc-Helicon.

Dan, as I'm guilty of calling the IFX not a "true vocoder" as well, I guess because it's so limited. I'm not a vocoder expert, but it appears to be like a one band type? I'm hoping for at least a 16 band so one doesn't need to buy extra gear to cover this.

Novation's Vocoder on their miniNova I've found quite interesting for example. It's only 12 band, but has some other goodies that are unique.

No, I'm talking about the pitch shift mode. It DEFINITELY responds to MIDI input and is not monophonic. When you first talk into a mic, you hear your voice an normal pitch. Now hit a key near the bottom of the keybed and the pitch is shifted to that pitch. If you hit 2 notes at the bottom of the keybed (a couple notes apart), your voice sounds at both of those keys. Your vocal inflections are exactly as you speak them but a couple octaves deeper (and demonic). Now hit a pitch about 2 octaves above middle C and you sound like a little kid.

All the MIDI does is give the pitch shift a starting point for your voice. You can also use the knob to set the pitch but the keys allow you to do several voices in various pitches at once.

Here's a DVP-1 video that demonstrates pitch shift in it. As sad as it is, Pitch Shifter is the main reason I keep my DVP-1.

That video shows the monophonic Pitch Shift mode, just as I would expect. Since you have the DVP-1, perhaps you could run it and see which front-panel button is lit when it's operating as you describe: HARMONIZE or PITCH SHIFT. My guess is HARMONIZE.

So, um... Dan.

Again, you were right. From now on, if I question something you say. Feel free to just say "You're wrong because I'm telling you you're wrong." I won't be offended. I guess I'm getting up there in age where all of my memories are starting to get fuzzy. :(

So about that HARMONIZE function. That would be AWESOME if the Kronos could get that. :) :) :)
