Master Muppet advises: Forget Orbital and listen to The Orb

In case anyone gets the wrong impression from my posts, I love my KPRO, warts and all. It's just been a frustrating experience adapting to the control interface that has resulted from re-using the KP3 chassis.

I love the Orb, but the man was talking about techno :)

(some would say Orbital isn't techno either, but certainly closer than t'Orb)

Stop talking about music, complain about the KPro instead

i'm just saying, if you're looking for a *synth* this isn't really it. i've never played around with an R3 so i don't know too much about it, but it's bound to have far more features in terms of polyphony, velocity, programmable parameters like LFOs and evelopes, (so you aren't stuck with presets), etc.

i see the kpro as more of a realtime looper with some sounds built in.
Having been messed around with R3 for couple of days now, it is really what i been wanting to, of course it would be cool to control it with touchpad, but I can live with the keys ^^

Don't be so hard on yourself, I figured things out myself, that I don't really want kopro, but a real synth ^^

I'm new here, so if my etiquette is out of bounds, my apologies. :)

@RichF:

My question about the Kaossilator Pro is concerning the SD card compatibility. Korg states on their product page that there is no SDHC compatibility for the card slot for the KoPro. Not only does this limit the amount of data you can save to a card(2 GB, not bad, but not good either), but it also limits the type of cards you can buy:

http://korg.com/Product.aspx?pd=564

Standard SD cards can be used in SDHC slots, but SDHC cards are incompatible with Standard SD slots....no amount of formatting or "initializing" will work. Add to this the fact that these 2 GB-and-smaller Standard SD cards are becoming more and more rare (about 20% of the SD format market and falling), and also that a newer, higher-capacity format of the SD card was rolled out in 2009 (SDXC, for 32 GB and higher), and the storage capabilities of the KoPro is practically 2 generations obsolete coming out of the gate! It's the Electribe + SmartMedia debacle, version 2.0!

My question is, "Why did Korg do this, and will there be a firmware update to correct this inadequacy?" Yes, yes, I know you can upload files from the KoPro to a PC/Mac via USB, but that's not the point. The point is that for the money we are spending on these wonderful musical devices (and they are great), we should have a better focus from Korg's engineers on making sure products don't go obsolete so quickly.

For a more info on SD card technology, please check the mighty Wikipedia:

The SD-Card thing is funny and without a doubt strange. But it will be no problem for 99% of the owners I guess. There are other problems...

X is CC12 and Y is CC13, how do you break down notes to separate CC# for this you are limited to one number in the X/Y CC controls?
The CC messages can all carry a value of 0-127, which is where the X and Y axis position is read. If you don't specify a range for CC#12 or CC#13, they'll be set at their lowest value (bottom-left corner of the pad).

As an example, I've setting up a template in MIDI-OX (it's free, if you don't have it, it's an indispensable tool) to translate MIDI notes to CC messages.

When it hears any note-on message, the first thing it does is set CC#92 (pad touch) to 127 (on). So, now there's a virtual finger on the pad. The note on messages also triggers a corresponding value on CC#12 (pitch). I set the joystick Y-axis (or modwheel) to control CC#13, which is the Y axis.

So far it's working pretty well... I'll share it with you guys once I get it polished!
Hi Rich,

I would like to have it!
Please post a link to it!
