I use one of the stock bass sounds and initially play the same passage twice. You can hear how changing the way I release the upper note affects how the sounds are generated. I then play some 1/2 step and whole step slides by playing quick legato.

I did not use any controllers at all. Just a simple one hand line.

Anyway, anyone who is actually interested in sonic differences...

Go play the simple line above on the Kronos in real time and see what you get.
I'd recommend using I-A080 STR-1 A.Bass for comparison.
I went back and tried that program. I had already tried it but didn't remember the name. I'm not sure if there is some way to program that patch to do things the Jupiter was doing, but I'm not finding any way to play the same thing in real time with the various details and articulations.

I do really like some of the tonal qualities of the STR-1 sounds.

That's pretty over the top wouldn't you think? And he wasn't being sarcastic at this point yet.
panrixx wrote:Spakie, you prefer the Roland - that's fine. Now go and play on the Roland forum - what is the point of you being here anyway?
Well this "sparked" ole sparkie off in a big way. Up to this point he was actually pretty civil (besides going on about the keybed and build quality issues). But really, can you blame him? His subsequent responses were no more ugly in spirit as the comment panrixx posted. Anyway by page 17 he had calmed down.

So yes I do see Kronos users as being the instigators in this thread. Now that we have that out of the way, let's all go back to what we started on page 19--patting ourselves on the back for being so civil about this very controversial topic.
Guilty as charged, although taken slightly out of context. I was rude and wish I had been a lot calmer in my response. The reaction was out of frustration at, what seemed to me, a totally negative onslaught on the Kronos and praise of the JP-80. Sparkie had replaced the former with the latter and seemed intent on justifying this in a very unbalanced way.

As I have already said, I have nothing against the Roland and to quote myself "Show me where I have made any adverse comment about the JP80".

Sparkie and I did get a bit heated at one point and I regret some of the things I said. I hold no ill feelings with Sparkie - why should I?

I don't know exactly what's behind EP-1 and what's behind SN, but after having played a RD-700 NX and a Kronos, my opinion is that
• the SN acoustic pianos can measure up to GB sampled piano libraries
• the so-called SN EPs can't hold a candle to Korg's EP-1, nor to the Yamaha CP5 modelled EPs.

Totally agree. Love the SN pianos but Kronos EPs are my favorite. I had the CP1 and really regret selling that. Best action and amazing EPs.

Something about Roland EPs make them sound better suited to modern day Joe Sample rather than gritty old school Crusaders Joe Sample. Detail is there, but the character isn't quite on.

You have all missed one very important point.

Last night I fired up my Jupiter 80 and my Kronos 61. It was difficult because it was 2:45 AM after an evening of cavorting about. I had these little blue crystally like things floating around my head and everything had a weird mother-of-pearl quality to it. Looked cool but hard to navigate. I stopped trying to talk because words just sounded kinda funny and my lips were numb anyway. Sat down, lifted my hands, and began to plink about the keys. Sounded awful! No left channel! I explored and found a bar napkin in my left ear so that was the problem there. I removed the napkin and threw it away - couldn't read the phone number on it anyway - and started banging (metaphorically of course) on the keys and changing sounds and programs and combis and Karmas and Registrations and Performances and quickly found out one very important and critical thing:

J80 is WAY easier to play than the K61 under those physical conditions.

I'll stay sobre then and enjoy the Kronos

Hilarious! (I agree by the way albeit JP-80 + OASYS).

Hope you don't regret losing that number though...

OK.. Serious, good comments about synthesis here.. and now that we all know the build quality is so much better on the Jupiter.. lets discuss why "all the sounds" in the Jupiter are that much better. (running for cover...)

FWIW, just got a behind the scene tour/listen of the 1927 Austin Pipe Organ Co. at the Science Church of Christ in Louisville, the ears are still tingling! The organist has been playing there for 10+ yrs and was a master at it showing off different flutes, pipes ranks etc... Amazing to see how one of these really work. Hearing this, I then came home and threw my keyboard in the trashcan... :)

Stay sober and enjoy the Kronos.
Hmmmm. Interesting idea. But, to be clear, alcohol was not involved.

Seriously though, both of these 'boards are (sounds stupid to even say) outrageously powerful and flexible. The Kronos - wait for it - . . . is better than the Oasys because everybody is on board already instead of having to pay for it. I had an O76 and wanted the Legacy Analog Collection but didn't want to pay $300+ for the unlock code. K61 has it already. Insane emulation on both boards. I think the pianos on the K sound better than the J, but I also haven't really dug into the J deeply yet. Being blind is a serious handicap so give me some time. Kidding. And for all you blind people reading this, my cousin is blind and he jokes about it all the time so relax. The build quality is not an issue for me because I'm a lowly home studio type. My rock star days ended - paused? - back in 1975 after 5 or 6 years of very interesting times back then. But the J is far more durable than the K. The D Beam on the J is a lot more powerful, because its assignable, than people give it credit for, and the oversized registration buttons on the front are very convenient when playing around in the tie-dyed, incense burning, lava light, red and blue lit basement home studio. I imagine they'd be indispensable on stage.

But we all know about the strengths and weaknesses of the boards. I was just trying to lighten the mood a little.

Kronos 61 for sale soon. Need money for Kronos 73.

PEACE!

Oh, by the way. I built my own pipe organ out of garbage cans and old sewer pipe. Sounds pretty good!

It should be obvious that the Jupiter 80 is exactly one better than the Kronos, since 'J' comes before 'K', in the same way that eg. getting an 'A' is better than an 'F'.

This is why the Alesis Andromedia is the greatest synth ever created, and why the Z1 sucks so bad.

It should also prove once and for all that yes, Kronos is absolutely better than the Oasys. Four better, to be precise.
