Omnisphere anyone? Compared to Oasys?

I can't believe what happened to "my" thread: I asked about Omnisphere and get an introduction into Mod-7!

No - seriously, I just decided I won't get Omnisphere befor I got more into the Oasys. I loved sound-programming and spent many hours with my beloved Roland D50. The synth engines that I find most interesting on the Oasys are the Mod-7 and the MS20. I understand there's a nice step-by-step tutorial on the Mod-7 and that is exactly what I was looking for. So I'll start with this one!

EDIT: BTW I was not aware there are guided tours in the parameter guide as well. I read a large part of the manual of the Op-Guide and that one is stuffed with guided tours (eg. Sequencer chapter or Karma) and it helped a lot.
The parameter guide I only used if I needed detailed information on certain parameters. When I checked the Op-Guide for a guided tour for Mod-7 there was none. So I assumed there is none and one has to know the basics of FM and should use the Parameter-Guide for the details. Which I could not do. I suggest to Korg to make this more "public" when launching a new engine on the Oasys - well, perhaps they did and I overlooked it in the first euphoria ...

... in any case: I'm glad I got this twist in "my" thread and know it now!

Look at the bottom of the parameter group; it's there. "Reso," complete with AMS.

I've never heard the original Yamaha effect, either; maybe we can find a demo somewhere!

Sorry I may have gotten us off the path of your thread, didn't mean to on purpose. I just couldn't help asking the questions about this.

I have learned an incredible amount of info here on the forum and this post.

The aspect of coming up with a modified version of what Yamaha threw away is certainly one way to make a sound that is "different" and perhaps ear catching. But it's not just about mimicking something someone else has done, it's learning more about the capability of this magnificent instrument.

Dan & Daz - you guys are incredible for helping the community in this way with your knowledge and ability to share it with us.

I wonder how hard it is to find a working EX5 to get that sound from?

I wonder if Synthia or Mike might have one?

Thanks Dan, just took a peek at the virtual gui and it is right there. It's funny because I actually saw this page a lot when looking at this, but having got the idea in my head over the year there was no resonance my brain kind of blocked it out. Glad we're having this conversation and that misconception has been broken.

I think this typifies a kind of conversation I'd really like to have more here. There is so much synth here to explore, and plenty of new ideas too, 'cos this is not just your average Rompler meets VA. It's great share what you know and also have your misunderstandings corrected.

Forgive me for getting back on topic just a little bit, but I received my Omnisphere today and have been playing it all day. Some impressions:

1. Great soundscapes and atmospheric stuff.
2. Easy to work with.
3. A big improvement over Atmosphere.

But...

Playing Omnisphere reminded me of one of the main reasons why I got the Oasys: to remove myself from the computer when it comes to playing and creating sounds. All the hassles of todays soft synths (adequate processor power, fiddling with voice allocation, cracks and pops, latency this, buffer that) came back to me! (And I have a powerful computer.)

It's funny how a piece of shiny new software makes me like my Oasys even more...

What is the spec of your computer?

I was thinking of getting an Imac with 2.8GHZ and 2MB RAM. Then thinking of getting Omnisphere to complement my Oasys.

Anybody else got this setup? And is it any good?

imac core2 duo 2,4ghz, 4go ram

most of the patch use about 25/30% of the cpu power using an audio buffer of 128. with a buffer at 512, cpu power is about 15%. i notice that when the patches are loading, the cpu can reach 40 to 50%.

My system is a dual xeon 3.0 ghz with fireface 800. PC system

The omnisphere library is installed on an external lacie esata drive.

As already wrtitten ,most patches use 25-30% power.

The libarray is huge, so changing a catagory within all the patches takes a lot off time to change.

Searching for a patch on a certain keyword also takes more time then i would have expected.

Many, many patches will dramatically change in sound whem using the modwheel. The sound will not changing a little, but some change to a new kind off patch. Very beautifull.

There is also enrmous stereo effect in the patches, not always found in other synthsezisers.

A lot of film ready patches is also part of the package

For me the sound is off high quality. Groove lock with rmx is fabulous.

I do have a lot of sample and sound material, like east west and Beladmedia but the quality of this synth is close to them.

You will not regret purchasing this synth, that is for sure.
