1. Back up all the factory settings to a USB hard drive (never, ever edit it!). Make sure you format the hard drive correctly. For the OASYS it has to be FAT 32 to recognise anything more than 4Gb.

2. Delete everything on the Kronos, you've now got a blank canvas of 1,600 programs

3. Back that up as a your blank setup on the USB hard drive (never, ever edit it!)

4. Once you start building sounds back it up as a diffierent project each time on your USB hard drive

5. Back up your specific Global settings

6. Set-up midi templates for sequencers (only learned this myself today!) and back up to the drive

I wish I'd known the above when I first got my OASYS

You should back up the factory sounds the minute you get the Kronos out of the box (assuming you're getting it).

Yes you can erase, but why would you.. It's really simple enough to edit and save a Voice to a PCG and keep adding to it as you go.
The fact that you can audition your edited voices off the SSD in (Disk mode) and load individual or a whole bank in an eye blink is very cool.
So really the not enough bank issue is really not a problem if you look at it this way.. JMO

OK, so how many good sound is needed in reality? 1,664 seems to be enough for many musicians, I guess.

Kidding: Please ask Korg to initialize let's say 500 additional programs slots (randomly) before shipping your Kronos. Then you will still have approx. 1,000 great Programs to use and a lot more free space, more than 600, for your own.

Seriously, how many user Programs you want to use? Please try Kronos first for yourself and answer only after that. (It means months of joyful playing... all OASYS users know it.) I don't think you will need SO much more besides the brilliant factory sounds. They are ALL very usable and expressive.

Prepare to be amazed.

As Lou said: you can audition the Programs or Combis right from the SSD while browsing, no loading needed. All SSD operations are lightning fast, immediate.

As a former Roland Fantom G user I am really happy to meet the Korg solution! I would have enjoyed kicking two thirds of the Fantom G factory presets out right away, and have filled all the empty space by own presets or edited factory presets.

I for one will NEVER need nearly as much factory presets as those 1500+ programs. I'm not interested in HAVING things (just in case I might ever consider them), but I'm interested in USING things. And if you count those sounds you really use on a regular basis (factory presets plus user presets) I would be very surprised if the number 1000 would even come remotely into sight. The rest is just pure luxury "just in case".

And the main sounds I do use more than casually are significantly below 100 for live play and below 500 for all kinds of home studio work with different variations of favorite sounds for mixes.
I personally regard anything beyond such rough dimensions just as a mirror of inefficient work, at least for myself.

Let's keep things in proportion: as soon as the first preset backup is done, I will edit, replace and reorder factory sounds all the time, and certainly not have to rely on the one bank of 128 free user slots left.

"Best of both worlds" does not mean "all of both worlds", by the way, it means "just the best/used and needed". The Dagobert Duck bath in ALL the wealth, just for having it, doesn't help making music.

Keep in mind that Replacing and Reordering Programs will render all combis to sound, well lets just say, not very good..

I will check the combis for probable use one by one just as well anyway.

But you are right that I should keep an eye on those which I wish to use unchanged, and note their programs.

I really hope there will be a helping solution for this. At least in the editor software - I haven't seen that yet.

Jim, with the default PCG loaded and selecting a combi, now going to the SSD and auditioning and loading your edited programs in your own saved PCG,
may prove to be easier than loading your own PCG and then working backwards.. just a thought?

Just curious Akos, are all the EXs loaded from the factory?
I personally would prefer to run all available until which time I need to offload.

Hey, a Kronos is not an Oasys.
You don't need an external drive.
You can backup data on the SSD.

I believe Korg provided Oasys users with an update for Effects.
I think some 700 effects were given to us? Not sure about the number but im sure there was an effects update...i didnt down load this actually for my O.

You would make your edits and save to a User Program or User Combi bank.
Or save it to SSD or thumb drive. You have many ways to save without changing the default sounds or combis.. Very cool!
