Just one small notice about all this softsynth/hardsynth fuss.

There is a big difference between PLAYING and making the music.

Hip - hop isn't playing the music - you make (program) loops, beats all that stuff, record it and that's it.

Softsynths are good for studio mastering and stuff like that, but for live playing they are no match for hard synth, you can connect MIDI controller to PC, load samples and play, but there is a difference, and softsynth doesn't stand any chance if you use just them.

Another thing - musicians who tend to work with PC only loose their playing skill and that's inevitable. I play for few hours each day and most of the time I just practice my speed, accuracy, dynamics and stuff, to maintain the skill (Nedim, you know what I play so you know what I mean).

So, bottom line, there isn't comparison between the two - performer cannot play without hard synth and there is no serious studio business without softs.

In the past month I sold most of my hardware stuff, and used that money to buy a new Macbook Pro, Apogee Duet, Logic 8, and I feel 100 times more productive, especially when I am traveling.

tyron, I don't mean to disrespect what you do, you earn money with it, you find it OK and it works for you. But it is PROGRAMMING the music, not playing the music. Just my opinion, so no hard feelings, OK?

So what have I learned today? Hip Hop is never played by live musicians. Got it.

Performers can't use all software, or they'll lose their chops. Got it.
I'll make sure to stop doing these things now that I know the rules. Thanks.

SynthDogg, there is no rules in music but there is many genres that they
CANNOT be PLAYED live..and HIP HOP is one of them, since there actually
is no MUSIC in HIP HOP. I never personally saw anybody PLAY HIPHOP live
and that doesnt mean there isnt but i have never seen.
I see zilions of JAZZ, ROCK, BLUES, FOLK, and other stuff played live.

No, Nedim, you don't get it:
when you take PC on stage, get all the software working and pres "PLAY" it is actually playing live.
I see now how wrong I was all the time.
I came home an hour ago and already started sequencing all songs I play with my band so I can convert them to smf, go to stage, pres PLAY and play live.
I'll get my mic and say "who is in charge", "shrike is in the house", "Say yeah", "Say ooo-ooo" eventually in the song and that's it.
See?

Synthdogg, naturally computers live AREN'T used just to play back tracks.
You can use computers for softsynths and sample libraries live, but without hardsynth's sounds there is no way that could work fine.

There is no way in live playing softsynth could emulate every thing hard one can do. And what if that softsynth freezes in the middle of some virtuos piece? What then?
