That's the way it has always worked, and is intended to work.

Here's a relevant section from the Smooth Sound Transitions overview in the Operation Guide - see the first bullet point.

There are only two parameters that relate to SST: the Global Hold Time, and the Hold Time for each Slot in a Set List. Under the hood, though, there’s a lot going on. We’ll talk about some of this in detail below, but if you’re in a hurry, here are the main things that you need to know

• SST works between two sounds at a time: the current sound and the previous sound. If you select a new sound while two older sounds are still overlapping, the oldest sound stops.
• SST requires that the effects for both the old and new sounds fit into the available processing power. For factory sounds, this should almost never be a problem. In the unlikely event that the effects don’t fit, the older sound will be silenced, including all of its notes and effects.
• The Hold Time parameters control how long the old sound rings out after all of its notes have been released.
• KARMA and the Drum Track stop when you change sounds. Their notes will continue to ring out naturally.

That would be nice - but the startup screen comes from the sub-system firmware, not the OS.

I noticed there is no voice name list among the manuals. I am wondering whether that means those extra voices in the new Kronos are not included in the 3.0.2 update or if the 3.0.2 update installs them automatically. Either way, I'll make sure I have a current backup.
From the announcement email quoted at the top of the thread:

Note: KRONOS System Version 3.0.2 provides nearly all of the features of the new KRONOS, except for the updated sounds and sample libraries. These updated sounds and libraries, including the EXs17 Berlin D Piano, EXs18 Korg EXs Collections, and new Programs and Combinations, are expected to be made available for owners of previous KRONOS models in late January 2015 (price TBD).

Thanks, Dan. I had missed that somehow. :)

K is for Kronos wrote:Hi,
So I am excited to update my Kronos to the new OS, but need a little guidance before I start. I have only updated my OS once before after only having a short time. When I did the update I did not have custom programs or Combis saved, nor did have the additional samples that I have since loaded (Thanks Busch). Will these be wiped upon updating to the new OS.
Korg updates never change the sounds that you've loaded into memory. It's still a good practice to use Save All from time to time, to make sure that your work is backed up.

There are only two things I can think of that should take more resources from the audio processing, and both can be disabled if desired:

1. Level meters. There's a parameter to enable/disable on the Global Basic page. Here's the entry from the Parameter Guide:

* * *
Level Meters Off [Off, On]
This option disables the level meters for Oscillators, Timbres, Tracks, audio inputs, IFX/MFX/TFX, and Master Volume.
In some cases, the level meters may slightly decrease polyphony. If this occurs, enable the Level Meter Off option.
* * *

2. SGX-2 string resonance. This can affect polyphony. However, it also should be off by default for all existing sounds. It's controlled by the String Resonance parameter on the new 5–1: String Resonance/Una Corda page.

Thanks for bringing that to my attention, Dan. I'm hoping that turning off the level meters is going to resolve this. Kudos to Korg for including that option...great thinking.

Thanks for the information Dan. That aspect of SST completely slipped my mind. The mistake was pointed by the BillW in a post immediately following my response.

Best Regards,
Larry

My Kronos took about 5 minutes to boot under OS 2.x because of all the extra samples I initially load into memory. Under 3.0 it's only taking about 3 minutes. YAY! And now that a program can automatically find sample data to load, I may just adjust my autoload samples to load less.

I honestly don't care all that much about the boot time, it's rarely a problem. But that they managed to shave off like a quarter is nothing less than stunning to me and possibly their biggest technical achievement this update.

This is a GOOD update. Love the new fonts, faster booting and level meters. Haven't noticed any difference with the fan because I already put in a silent fan, but I very much appreciate a temperature reading.

I'm sure its unfair that Dan gets all the credit for this (because others worked on it), but he can have all the credit anyway.

I think it is totally fair - he gets all the complaints too!

Very good..!!

Very good this OS upgrade.

Too people said something about... This not work.. This is a bug... This is bad...

I remember DW8000.... Very good synth. And keyboard player simply played and used as is..!!

The same for DS8, M1, T series... O1w... Etc...,!

Too manny people go to the heaven and are crying.

( van al cielo y estan llorando )

Korg need to fix details OS in the all synth and arrangers ..? Yes of course..!!

But i believe that... Never forget the synth history. Dont loose the horizon..!

I bough my kronos in sept 2011... And now i have a new OS .. And i feel my old kronos like a kronos 2. Without spend no money..!!

THANKS KORG.!! THANKS.!

This is a amazing machine ... With or without the upgrades.

Dont loose the horizon..!

My wish is a piano roll like my old M3.... But if korg never upgrade to this... I will still happy...!! I enjoy play and compose with my keyboard.!!

This is the goal for me.

Remember another tthing.. In the market exist some expensive workstation or keyboards with a tiny upgrades or with no upgrades..!

And the new models left the olds like a t-rex..!!

Thanks again Korg. Very good keyboard and nice, really OS ..!!

I thought my mind was playing tricks, but yes, boot time is faster :)

Another improvement I can see - the screen is more responsive.
I was beginning to think mine was failing - especially when using scroll bars to pick patches. But this is much better.

The other thing no-one has mentioned is the multi select button on the set list. I use different patches for parts of a song so this is a big improvement.

Though I still wish for set list slots that can contain multiple patches that can be stepped through during a pedal so that a slot contains a single song.

Os4?
