Syntax Error....

Trying to DL software and soundware updates on my mac. Granted this is an older mac and i'm maxed out running Snow Leopard.
When I attempt to install, I get
"Open Directory - unable to read the dictionary of this application or extension because it is not scriptable"
Can anyone advise me on how to fix this ( preferably without the obvious "buy a newer mac" type answers)
