My Kronos Wi-Fi mod

Post by Aziz1008 »

Hello, yesterday I've installed a 500 Gb HDD, NoiseBlocker fan, and a TP link TL-MR3020 pocket router into my Kronos 61.

First things first - Kronos supports simultaneous usage of WI-FI and USB FTP ! Thanks Korg developers for that. Because while WiFi ftp speed is around 2-5 Mb / second, USB ftp is much higher - 11-12 Mb/second.
When you connect a LAN adapter dongle to Kronos usb port, while being already connected over WiFi router - its Network page says "Cable unplugged", you should just click reconfigure it in DHCP mode, and from that moment on, both FTP connections - manual and DHCP remain active. Initially I thought it switches off Wi-Fi router connection, but that is not the case - it is even better, they both work like a charm.

I forgot to take fotos, maybe next time I will post them here if I happen to open Kronos someday. Hopefully it will not be soon, because it is not good to disturb its screws (they will get lose eventually) and inner parts.

But there was some kind of router configuration struggle, so i thought it might be helpful to someone if I post my results here.

So, first - I did not see any photos of placing router inside, so I've found my way of doing it - I just fixed it with 3M durable tape to the metall chassis next to Kronos MB lan port. And placed router itself right on top of that LAN port, between bottom and side chassis and LAN port top. Later I've found that no one did it like this, people mounted router to SSD cage etc. But I wanted to keep airflow at maximum and had short USB wire. So I did it that way.
I succeded pushing USB cable into USB port without dissassembling side plastic panel. I just had to cut off some RG45 connector rubber for it to be bent in a more sharp angle.

There are a lot of iPad ftp clients, some with streaming features..

About settings for dual FTP usage.

My router is set to AP (access point) mode, with DHCP on, and Kronos Network page is set to manual configuration:

IP: 192.168.0.200
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Router: 192.168.0.108

Initially I changed my router IP to 192.168.0.1 - for easy memorizing, but - there were problems in accessing the router webinterface - i just could not connect to router due to some errors. I thought that 1 is too widely used and can interfere with system software so I changed it to 108 in router settings and it worked normally.

Also I tried to insert a mini-pci express (?) WiFi card into corresponding MB slot, but no results. It said cable unplugged. May be it needed drivers. And there was a moment when Kronos stumbled at S letter when loading with this card inserted. With a constantly lit Disk indicator. I was in panic and though I broke K system and rebooted it several times. At last it booted ok. So I do not know, may be if I connect to a WiFi spot generated by that card, Kronos would not say "Cable unplugged?" I was too scared so I forgot to scan WiFi networks to check it)

And there was an idea of protecting Kronos against theft - there's a pocket router D-Link dir-506L and others with a built-in battery. So one possible setup would be detecting its WiFi signal strength, and making alarm/sms etc if it goes weaker than a defined level...) So it would be a dual function device - WiFi FTP and anti-theft alarm)

Warning: all this will void your warranty. And I am not responsible for any bricked Kronos, do it at your own risk..)

I'm really technologically noobie so apoligies in advance for dumb questions

What benefits are you thinking of regarding this mod? In terms of practical solutions or applications? Interested to hear what your plans are. Would be interested in video etc. Keep up the good work ;)

I'm planning to use iPad for organizing Kronos files, and, the main reason, for quickly sending a custom made sample sound from PC DAW to Kronos disk or vice versa. Othewise I would need to plug in external LAN to USB adapter or use flash dongles for this data exchange. Wav files preview from iPad, although it should download them first.

Another possible usage would be sharing Kronos disk content among fellow musicians with the same or different keyboard. Or organising sound library on two Kronoses.

Besides that, I just like the idea itself that Kronos becomes more easily accessible and can emanate musical files right on the air :) An additional degree of freedom is never too much.
