I'm a sound designer who has done synth programming for almost three decades. I'm very very familiar with the Kronos architecture.

So here's something I'm almost embarassed to admit - I'd like to make a program that is just a clap, with some slap delay added, for a live show I'm doing. I cannot find a single "clap" waveform...and I've scrolled through the entire list of waveforms in the Rom.

There are of course claps in the drumkits...but I don't want to use a drumkit for just a clap. I want to make a program that is just a clap all by itself. It seems that this is not possible..am I missing something?

The way I've achieved similar to what you want (without finding an individual waveform) is to use the drum kit in a combi; but limit the key range and transpose it so just the clap you want sits on the key required; without any other drum sounds being playable.

Did it recently where I had three adjacent keys each with castanet samples on so you could do like a castanet roll/shake across the three keys.

Thanks...yes I've done that before. It's a workaround but not ideal. This is an area where Yamaha workstations do have one up on the Kronos - every single drum and percussion waveform is available separately for use in an oscillator in a voice (Yamahaspeak for "program").

Sadly, what I will have to do is create the clap sample on my own and import it to the Kronos for use in a program.

How about resampling?

There are definitely claps in the drum kits on my Kronos 2 i use one on a single key in a Combi for Tainted Love.

While I understand your frustration, is there a specific reason you can't use a drumkit?

I agree; much easier than resampling and creating a User KSC, so that it loads properly.

In Drum Kit, select a User kit and set the key range so the clap covers the whole keyboard and save to a User slot. In Program OSC page, select the drum kit just like you would a ROM sample. Now edit your program just like you would had you selected any other sound.

Btw, the search function will help you find Claps, easy. You may have to open up more than one ROM or EXs collection to find what you want. This pic shows a search of EXs5.

Thanks...see, even I didn't know that was possible (and I've done sound design for Korg in the past). How embarassing.

I will definitely give this a go.

To be fair, the search function was only added fairly recently (OS 3 I think?). It's really nifty though, I've used it a lot more than I thought I would. The only search I miss is one that lets me look for a Set List slot.

I'm not "from" Keyfax but yes my DCP libraries for Motif were sold at Motifator.com which is run by Keyfax.

Dave, you shouldn't feel embarassed at all! You are definitely a good sound designer (I bought your Steinberg soundpacks for Retrologue), and the drumkit programming in the Kronos belongs to the less intuitive and less straightforward parts of the Kronos OS.

Update - I ended up using a sample of 20 people clapping that I recorded myself, for this. Just couldn't find a drumkit clap that sounded
like what I needed.

I do wish importing samples was easier on the Kronos - seems one has to copy an existing sample to a new location, then import your new sample to THAT location, then resave with a new sample name, save it to your existing user KSC by overwriting...I guess I have it right, because the sample (which I then converted to a program) loads up when I boot my Kronos.

Hmm, the process you're using sounds more convoluted than I think is necessary: it should be reasonably straightforward importing some new samples.
