I would appreciate some general advice on how easy it is to substitute the GM sounds used for the backing tracks on the PA4X with sounds from other keyboards or sound modules and the pros & cons. A pointer in the direction of where to look for how to do it would also be very helpful.

Well first up it's really easy, before you start hooking up external modules etc try the high quality internal sounds for your tracks. You can also import samples to work and if your minded that the onboard sounds don't cut it for you then midi out and program your patch changes and off you go.

To be honest we use canned tracks and between the internal sounds and my sample loads I find that you have all you need under one hood.

I agree with mintjammin. Very easy to select alternate onboard instruments for a great mix. One of the reasons I bought the Pa4X was so I wouldn't need to use lots of peripheral gear any more.

That's great news guys, didn't know you could use the keyboard set sounds for the backings or load samples as I haven't got to that part of the manual yet and am completely new to Arranger keyboards.

Be assured the Pa4x is deep, this is my first arranger ever although I have loads of other keyboards but at first glance it appears the Pa4x is a simple home player instrument. It can be but there is so much it can do and it's taken me 10 months to get it doing what I need and it surprises me that almost whatever I throw at it the Pa4x delivers. It's a superb keyboard suited to live performances be that on your own, in a group using it as a multimbral instrument for splits, layers or adding in some backing or all of that and then some. My only wish is that it had a different keybed and action but it is what it is and you adapt.
