since the new 4x styles won't load into the 3x , is special software needed to convert them ???

No software can do it yet.
Best way is to export each style's CV's and import them into a new style on pa3x.
Adjustments/eq/FX all from scratch again...
Some styles though could be converted via Emc styleworks software, but that's only for some styles, not for every style....best way is everything from scratch for now!!!

CV = "Chord Variation"
A single
VARiation within a single STYLE can have up to 6 CVs
Let's say you've created a 4-measure backing (all tracks) in a style's VAR1 CV1
That will play correctly no matter what chord-types you are playing e.g. minor/dim/aug chords (i.e. chord-types)
However often one may want some subtle musical differences in the style tracks when playing these different chord types.
CVs give you this facility - so
CV1 could be for 7th chords
CV2 could be for minor chords
CV3 for everything else
etc...etc...
It's this structure which gives Korg arrangers the "lead" in style authenticity configuration.
A good "STYLE-STRUCTURE" description and background can be found from page 224 in the current PA4X User Manual - well worth reading and will hopefully set you straight.
Cheers
Pete

Stilli , Do not mess with exporting styles' partial CV SMFs !
It's far better and easier to export a full style SMF of Pa4X using shift button and importing the whole style SMF0 in Pa3X
But a really nasty job of editing almost everything will follow in any case since 2 arrangers have different sound libraries ,
effects and routing architecture and certainly will never sound in the same quality !

Thanks Pete, that was a very good explanation, I am enlightened and will check out that section of the manual as you suggest.
