Best way to do this. Please advise.

Post by tdwctdwc »

Hello everyone,

The community in our town is doing a replica of "Into The Woods" broadway musical and i have to perform live with the play using orchestral patches.

The kronos obviously will be my only controller (i have a 61 key).

The music is mainly orchestral and requires switching constantly between a lot of sounds as the play goes on.

What would you advise the best way to do this:

1- Use 3rd party samples/vsts on my laptop and control the sounds through Combi mode (I will be using Ableton as DAW).

or

2- Use the Kronos built-in sounds along with PurgatoryCreek's Sonatina Strings (for Kronos) and control the sounds though SETLIST mode.

Thoughts ?
Thanks!

FWIW-I've used my Kronos 73 in the pit for several musicals. To my mind, the set list option is the easiest to use in live performance, especially now that you can color code the slots. Using the set list would avoid requiring a laptop and DAW. The simpler method is usually the most effective (and trouble-free).

"I wish! I wish! I wish a lot things!" Oh wow, the memories haha. I even remember the opening chord (Cm7 hehe. Well that was the version we had)

I played in a stage band for the musical during high school. This was 6-7 years ago. But however, I played a saxophone and trumpet. I know my school had a professional piano player that donated his time to help us. He did most of the intricate parts all on piano.

If it was me doing this again, I would have used just built in sounds on Kronos. They sound really good, in my opinion. And I also think nobody would even know the difference.

How many musicians are involved in this musical?

Kronos only + setlist. Simplest setup.

Thanks guys. Yeah i already started setting up the setlist :) It's looking good so far.

Kontakt libraries are great and all but now that i downloaded Sonatina Strings for Kronos, i'm getting extremely close to the sound i want from my strings, that way i can ditch the Laptop and all that hassle.

@mpabisz, I'm the only "musician" in the event lol, so i have to gather and put in the setlist every single instrument present in the original play and perform it all on the Kronos.

Thankfully, the Setlist makes life easier (to say the least) so i'm not worried.
