Microkey2 on MacBook Pro USB C not powering up

My new MicroKey2 does not power up on a new MacBook Pro via USB C; the red light flashes a few times and then goes out for good.
The MicroKey seems to work fine on an old MacBook with older USB ports.
How can I fix this, or do I need to return my new keyboard to the dealer and buy one that works on a new MacBook?
