V1.8.0 on Win 10 - "Failed to start the audio engine&qu

I recently dusted off an old copy of the Korg legacy M1 / Wavestation that I bought ages ago. (Long enough ago that the disk says "Windows XP". So, I thought to myself that possibly this might be difficult and went to the Korg site. Lo and behold, there's a version 1.8.0 that's downloadable that supports rather more modern versions of Windows. (Per the subject, I'm running on Win10 V1803 - the spring update.)
I downloaded, installed them, registered them and thought that life would be good.
Alas, when I try to start M1, all I get is the dreaded error message "Failed to start the audio engine". It refuses to talk to either ASIO or MME or DirectSound. There don't seem to be any particular clues as to why it's sulking.
Any suggestions as to where to look?
