MS20ic LED lights in plugin mode

Hi guys! Something I've been trying to work out for a while... why is it that the MG and key press LEDs in the MS20ic Legacy controller only work in standalone mode and never in AU or VST plugin? Does it have to do with the way MIDI works in plugins? Hasn't anyone come up with a solution (other than the very inelegant solution of running the standalone in the background with the volume down...)
