d3200 session drums recording

Good afternoon. I am having problems recording session drums to tracks.
I have them correctly assigned (#1 and 2 tracks, left and right drum icons, respectively assigned as source. Also have ch assign radio button checked on session drums mixer page) . I follow directions from the manual to the letter yet I when I have set the drums and tested sounds, as soon as I press record button on the console the drum controls (e.g. run, etc.) are greyed out and I can't get them to operate while console is in rec mode.
What am I missing? I have trying to figure this out for a week. Thanks!
