Help Pls? Setting MicroKorg Up In Reason To Control Synths

Post by QualityNotQuantity »

Currently I am successfully using my Microkorg + Triton Extreme as midi controllers in Reason.

1. I have no problem using my Korg keyboards to play soft instruments VST's etc and record midi notes.

2. I have no problem using the Microkorg to play Triton sounds and vice-versa using a Reason External Midi Instrument.

3. I also have audio from both Keyboards going into Reason via my Babyface pro + TotalMix - so all good so far.

I really want to use / assign the MicroKorg CONTROLS 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 knobs and PROGRAM NUMBER
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 keys to control soft synth parameters / controls etc

I have read the manual and searched for videos but I can not get my head around it.

ps with so many buttons / knobs on the Triton Extreme - can these be assigned as well?

Any help? - step by step guides would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Concerning the microKorg.
The program numbers 1 to 8 can not really be used. When pushed, the board will transmit the MIDI message "program change", followed by the number of the program (1 to 128). This also depends on the bank select dial and bank side key (A/B). It can be used to select another preset in the VST to which it has been assigned.

The controls 1 to 5 send out the MIDI message "Control Change" (CC#) followed the number of the control and the value for it. This can be used for controlling your VST parameters. The control number depends on the edit select dials (the selected row in the parameter matrix). Refer to the table in the manual (p56) for the control numbers assigned to the different parameters (these are the factory default assignments). E.g. if you choose the mixer row, knob 1 to 3 will send out respectively CC#20 to CC#22 + the position of the knob (0-127). Knob 4 and 5 will not send anything as they don't have a function on the mixer row.

Concerning the Triron
The same story is applicable as for the microKorg. You'll need to look in that manual to find out which control sends out what CC# number.

Setting up Reason
I've no experience with it. Typically these things have some MIDI setup page, or some right click option to assign a physical control to a synth parameter and a learning function so that you don't really need to dig into the manual. Thank you OpAmp for your detailed reply and link etc.

I now have the Triton Extreme rotary knobs controlling some Reason soft synths parameters - but seeing how it speeds up work flow I want more :D

Before I knew it I was searching for more dedicated midi controllers.

The KORG nanoKONTROL2 is quite cheap and is covered by Reason so I am going to give that a try.

Thanks again.
