System cannot start due to a file system error

Hi folks, long time :)

So my Kronos failed to start up yesterday with the error:

Code: Select all

System cannot start due to a file system error

Please reinstall the system software

(6)
And the problem persists :(

I don't have access to a USB-DVD drive (nor the original DVDs, though those are downloadable) So for reinstalling, has anybody had any luck flashing the Korg Accessories Disk 1 ISO to a USB stick and have the Kronos boot from the USB stick? My initial attempt at this was not successful..

Is there perhaps some magic combination of keys to make it boot from a USB like any other computer, or some way to override the boot perhaps? Couldn't find anything in the guides and manuals, but who knows, perhaps I missed something.

Also, the service manual mentions a diagnostic mode by pressing [Mixer Knobs] + [Reset Controls] + [5] + [Enter], but that is not a mode I can enter from boot, it seems..

Next option is to extract the harddisk and get it mounted on linux / mac to see if I can fdisk it like done here: http://www.korgforums.com/forum/phpBB2/ ... stem+error. Or at least verify if the disk is at fault.

Any other ideas?

If not, then service I guess. (It is out of warranty by a year or two, so that wasn't my first option)

Thanks :)

Hello,

For what I know, you can't boot from usb on Kronos, only from DVD. You can easily get an external portable DVD reader for low price.
I don't know on what Amazon website you can go from Norway but here in France, there are some DVD reader from 23 $ : https://www.amazon.fr/Cocopa-Enregistre ... 178&sr=8-5

Original DVD are downloadable from Korg website :

1. http://i.korg.com/uploads/download/Kron ... _3_1_3.iso

2. http://i.korg.com/uploads/download/Kron ... _3_1_3.iso

3. http://i.korg.com/uploads/download/Kron ... _3_1_3.iso

I think you should tempt to reinstall the system, first and then, if it doesn't work, send your Kronos to a repair service.

Hi there,

Could be a number of things. If unit is still under warranty, send it to the nearest Korg service center, simple as that. Also, the diagnostic mode is rather useless for this type of fault and personally I would not bother with cloning/format at this point. If you are good at hardware and your warranty is expired, I would open the unit and start with (and testing with bootup after every item) : disconnect/reconnect the SATA cable and RAM, reconnect the SSD on the other SATA port (0 or 1), replace SATA cable, etc. If nothing works, then get a cheap USB-DVD drive and do a complete factory procedure, which of course will erase everything you saved before (hopefully you have some saves from before). Another thing that can give you clues would be to connect the MOBO video out to a monitor, which will give you the Linux output. There could be some info in the messages appearing there at bootup. If you don't feel at ease with hardware, instead bring the unit to qualified repair shop.

You can't access the diagnostic mode, because the diagnostic mode is on the SSD, and the SSD (or file system) has an issue.

You need a USB DVD drive to reinstall the software. I suspect this is by design to prevent the system accidentally booting from random USB sticks left in the back when powering on. You could potentially take the thing apart, plug in a VGA monitor, and change the BIOS boot settings, but for the sake of a $40 USB DVD drive, it hardly seems worth it.

You can remove the SSD and access it in Linux (not so much a Mac), if that's your preferred approach.

Thanks for the replies guys!

Yep, warranty is out.

I did open it up already and verified that I can get the harddrive out. Checked the SATA cables and such too and tried with my relatively untrained eyes to spot lose cables and such, but that was a bit of a longshot. Connecting VGA out on the motherboard is also a good suggestion.

I was hoping to avoid buying a DVD burner / player. Just seems like such a waste to get one for this one use when I've managed fine without optical media for 10 years, but it sounds like that is the option to go for first.

Also, if it turns out that the disk is busted and needs replacing, then I'll still need to install from the dvd, so looks like I'll need that anyway.

Figured I'd give a quick update on the progress. A few different players and a few badly written DVDs later, the Kronos is fully reinstalled and back up and running.

The reinstall process wasn't entirely smooth, as the first dvd player I used reported it didn't get enough power when I plugged in DVD2. The second player I used repeatedly failed to mount DVD2. (I have 4 copies of that disk now :p ). But after a few retries, it went through. My biggest worry which was that the disk was broken turned out to not be the case. Probably just a bad sector which the re-formatting managed to deal with.

My last backup was from 30.07.2020 with only one or two PROGs missing, so I'm pretty much back where I was at this point.

I hadn't fully realized how I'd missed my Kronos these last few weeks.. Man, its good to have it back :)

Happy to hear that you recover your Kronos. Some things always get in the way, and make the process harder, than expected. But that's the life.
Your last song Autumn, on your souncloud page is fantastic, one of the best, from my point of view. I wish you to fully enjoy your Kronos and all best.

Guys, I just downloaded last week DVD 1 and @ from these very links, and now they're not there anymore. I need to burn the DVD 3 here but can't complete the system restore because of this 3rd DVD.

Could someone kindly give a link for me of this 3rd DVD?

BTW Why Korg are not making them available anymore?

Thanks in advance, best.

Jo.
