Hello,

In the Kronos, effects from 109 to 140 are serial effects. Among them, we find "Amp Sim" (amp simulator as the name suggests!). There is one parameter with three possible settings: SS, EL84 and 6L6.

These three amps are not part of the selectable amps in effect 030: Guitar Amp Model. For this 030 effect, we know which amp each setting corresponds to (Vox, Marshall, etc..)

But for this purpose, does anyone know what are these three amplifiers SS, EL84 and 6L6?

EL84 and 6L6 are valve/tube designations, normally used in amp power output stages, with SS probably standing for solid state.

EL84 are used in amps like the Vox Ac30, Fender Blues Jr, Orange Tiny Terror, whilst 6L6 are used in Fender Twin Reverb, Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier, Peavey 6505 and Fender Hot Rod series. SS is likely to be a cleaner sound.

The problem with the Kronos valve amp models though is, that they do not remotely provide useable overdrive. This is totally outdated amp sim modeling, rather providing harsh digital noise than smooth overtone rich valve sound, even in very low settings.

Korg never bothered to fix this issue, despite user wishes right from the start, in more than a decade, to bring amp modeling on a similar level as many other fine Kronos effects. This has an overroportional negative impact on any effort to get convincing electric piano and B3 organ sounds, not speaking of synth, electric guitar and electric bass sounds.

This is one of the biggest issues I have with my Kronos, when using any of the mentioned instrument groups.

I can imagine some people could complain about distortion effects on guitar and bass sounds. To be honnest, I get better overdrived guitar sounds on my Montage.
But I'm totally satisfied with Kronos E.P, organ and above all, synths sounds.

Man this is why I love this forum. I was just working on a track in my Kronos last night looking at the settings going what is "SS" and all this stuff.

The Amp sim on the Kronos is kind of crazy. The cabin simulator has that wind feature or something that just makes it sound like "white noise" I keep trying to remove to get it to sound clean but never successful do.

Then I started looking at the other settings and saw what OP was talking about and started playing with those wondering what they meant.

I'm sincerely always impressed by the depth that the Kronos has when it comes down to the effects section. It's not superficial either it's a rather nice deep dive.

The Amp Sim effect [SS, EL84, 6L6] was introduced with the Trinity in 1995. You'll find it in every Korg workstation made since. Korg is very good at software reuse.
