Vocal Quality

Post by H.I.M »

You guys have been a huge help!
I'd like to thank each and every one of you!
I have another question lol
I'm using a Boss VE-8 Acoustic Singer pedal for my acoustic guitar and I've been using the voice side of that pedal for my vocals.
I want to use the PA4x for vocals but I can 't get the same quality vocals out of the 4x that I do with the Boss unit.
I know the 4x has many many more options but I can't find a combination that replicates the Boss
The boss has an "Enhance" knob that seems to really help shape the vocal.
I looked in the Boss manual it says the enhance knob "Improves the clarity of your voice by making the input volume more consistent."
Isn't that basically a compressor?
I tried the compressor on my mixer but it didn't do the trick.
How can I get better vocals?
Thanks!

I say go with what works..!

If the acoustic singer’s vocal section gets you exactly what you’re looking for, just input that to your Korg’s audio ins. Sometimes, the magic just can’t be replicated, and compressors are a very individual thing. Whatever is happening inside the Boss is unlikely to be exactly replicated with a Korg.

I know it’s a PITA to lug extra gear, but if it does the job better than the arranger, it may be worth it. I use a TC unit for the same reason. Whatever the input compressor/noise gate/de-esser is doing, I can’t get it the same in the arranger. So it gets used… A couple more minutes setup, a couple extra cables and power warts, but for me, worth it!

Plus, you still have the option of playing your guitar with a track and using that to derive harmonies. Win/win!

Vocal Quality

I really enjoy the sounds of my Pa4x except the guitar sounds and most importantly the vocal processor. It just doesn't do it for me. I've tried different Mics, a whole bunch of settings and it's just blah.

I've decided to to split my Mic, one half going into the Korg with the Lead Vocal turned all the way down. The other end into a SSL Audio Interface that has outstanding preamps. I run the outputs of the Korg and the SSL into a 4 channel mixer that fits nicely on the Korg. The ouput of the mixer goes into 2 Powered Speakers. This gives me great EQ and Reverb.

So now my main Vocal through the SSL sounds great and when I need harmony I press on my momentary pedal and the Korg gives me One or Two voices above but mixed with the outstanding Lead Vocal sound of my SSL interface.
