this is a review by a diehard Yamaha fanatic who has been begging companies to lend him an Event for appraisal for months and months. Now he has got one and within a day or so he posts an " extensive evaluation " of the Event, basically coming to the "most surprising " conclusion that it cannot even compete with the Genos 1, let alone the Genos 2 lurking in the wings and for which keyboard most Yammie fans are already wetting their pants so to speak. ...
Believe you me, I have played Korg arrangers for 20 years, I have played Ketron arrangers for the last 6 years and i have owned the Event for over six months now and though no novice in this field at times I still have the feeling that I have so far only been skimming the surface....Anyway, this Leigh video is basically jumping to conclusions by the wrong kind of person i.e. a diehard Yamaha fan...
Incidentally nothing wrong with Yamaha, I might even consider the Genos 2 myself in due time. All three, Korg, Yamaha and Ketron are fabulous state of the art arranger keyboards, all also costing an arm and a leg. It has a lot to do with personal taste and the use you have for it.
Personally I always apply FOUR criteria:
1. are you a singer or do you only play instrumental stuff?
2. are you a gigging artist, or do you only play at home ?
3. Do you prefer a polished (CD) sound, or an approximation of a real band?
4. Do you like to cover songs with accompaniments very close to the real
thing, that is use SongStyles, or do you prefer to shy away from those
and make your own Arrangements.....initially what Arranger Keyboards
where made for with generic styles and few or no songstyles ?
Depending on the answers to those four questions it is not too hard to decide which way to go. I could fill that in for you here, but I am sure you can all manage quite well each onto his own !!!
greetings,
John Smies

Do you mean the 12 year old Audya vs the 2023 Event?

yeah just curious - for example, is there stuff the audya can do and the event (or indeed the PA5x) cannot do?

Yes it was a shame that the demonstrator was hanging out for James Last

- I actually felt like he really didn't like the EVENT much at all since he continually apologised for being negative.
Personally, and I repeat, personally, the Event demos really don't excite me. It's a nice arranger with some nice sounds but very far from replacing my Korg. Like Tyros/Genos, I find the styles way too monotonous even though there are some nice little nuances. Since 21 years ago, Korg's Style structure and elements lead the way for me and still do - VARs, CVs etc....
I did like to see the "factual" demo comparison of the Event and Medeli. Medeli very much at a different level - BUT IS IT? Functionally and operationally there are several things demo'd that put the Medeli in a better light - smart OS and control surface.
It is easy for me to say that my PA4x is most definitely better than the PA5x but that is the result of my 21 years with Korg arrangers and answering johnsmies questions...etc... We all have varying requirements. The PA5x, right now, will NOT enable me to do things that I currently do on my PA4x (mostly because of its problems and failing/missing/changed features - I'm still waiting

).
Sorry - this is going a little off topic but it is good to hear all these views and opinions because, now, in 2023, I need tons of detail before paying out such a huge chunk of money.....
So currently for me:-
EVENT - no
PA5x - no but waiting
Genos 2 - maybe.... praying for a vastly improved OS
Take care
P

I think the main difference between the two is that the event has "real drums, real bass, real chords and real voices", while the Audya had only
real drums and a few real voices". Both of them could "solo" in variation D using real phrases following your chords.
If one wants band instruments, like drums, bass, piano, strings, saxes etc, the Event will be very appealing, IMHO.

Hey John
Yeah - always love your recordings - awesome
I can personally never find better than the Korg arranger - this is what I mean - here's recording I made 20 years ago using my Korg i3 using its fabulous backing sequencer - all sounds from the i3 and yes, of course, that was 20-year old sound technology.... (AI2 synthesis)... these were the 20-years-old styles (I still use them)!!! Now I have the PA4x - imagine the difference. Korg leads the way with styles IMHO - Tyros/Genos created many outstanding intros and endings but the actual body of their styles seem so unrealistic and repetitive - I find the EVENT to be similar so far - but until someone gives me one, I can't be totally sure.
