Sound design with iRandom(izer)

Some of you followed the discussion about Daz' randomizer in the librarian thread, and obviously quite a lot of people downloaded the software.

Recently I was asked by OASYANs how I am using it and what the results are. Although it is randomization the latter of course also depends on the personal taste. I have put together very vast.. ah, sorry fast track which took me half an hour together with the KARMAfied drums. You can listen to it here.

.. yes it is getting chaotic at the end. This is just to prove that I performed everything in one piece  :D

But seriously, if you want to listen to some iRandom sounds, then you should check out this.

Of course not everyone's taste.. no doubt, but this is not the fault of iRandom, which you can download here for free.

So what do you need?

- OASYS
- Mac running MacOSX
- MIDI Interface
- and some time... not much!

Start iRandom by double clicking. Now activate for example one of the AL-1 factory sounds. Choose AL-1 from the pulldown list of iRandom, move the fader a little bit to the right. At the beginning I suggest to start with small amounts of randomization (= 10 to 20%). Now push the button.. play on the OASYS, you like the change already? No? Ok, push again the button on iRandom software. Push it as often as it needs until you get a result you find interesting. It depends on the sound as from here it maybe makes sense to work analytical... If you get the feeling that it is going completely into the wrong direction, then go back to the starting point and activate the original program.

Another idea is to check the factory sounds before randomization. I for example like to use the controllers... and factory sounds are full of pre set controllers. Take this kind of sound as a starting point and follow the procedure described above.

So for example for my favourite solo sound I did it exactly the way described above. BUT at a certain point I decided to really program. In that case, it is a MS-20 sound, I switched to the oscillator page and changed to PWM in OSC1 and Ring in OSC2. Then a little treatment here, another one there... just a look at the filter, a small modification concerning the controllers, little more modulation here etc - finito!

Give it a try, it is worth it.

Do not want to adorn myself with borrowed plums... this is Mr. Daz' tool and it is a great one for anyone who wants to experiment a little bit.

Thanks Peter :-)

I also have some good news ... tada ... due to popular demand, there is now a Windows version (untested since I have no Windows machine in the studio). Created very quickly in my lunch break, hence the crappy icon ;-)

Mac OS X Universal Binary

Both Mac & Windows versions work identically :

Start the program and set the MIDI port and channel to the MIDI port your Oasys is connected and the Oasys Global MIDI Channel. The Program remembers those settings so you only need to it once.

Then follow Peter's instruction above ...

Enjoy,

Daz.

Very cool. Any chance you'd release the source as well?

Anyone tried it on Windows yet, did it work ?

I am seeing lots of downloads of the Mac version, 40+ in this month ... who are all those people I wonder.

Cheers,

Daz.

Hi Daz, I used your program on the PC since yesterday and it's working. You can achieve nice unexpected results especially with AL1, but I have to experiment more with the other Exi’s. I used it also with my own edited stuff.

Thanks Daz!

You're welcome :-)

I think Peter and I have found that the LAC-1 plug-ins work best with this.

Thanks all for letting me know the Windows version works, much appreciated. Do I get a payrise for getting it right first time ? ;-)

Well, I guess I must be royally screwing up in my usual manner as I am getting nothing via the Windows version..

Can't think of anything I am doing wrong. I select a Polysix program, select polysix from the dropdown box, make sure that my midi channel is the same as on the O.. Vorrect midi device shown in the dro down box.. move the slider a little to the right (or even all the way to the right) and press the randomize button.. et voila.. nothing.. Checked globals to make sure everything that needed to be turned on was on.. O works without issue with sequencers.. so I'm a bit lost as to what I may have forgotten or screwed up?

Help!

:)
