recording?

hi i just got a microkorg as my first synth and i want to record something on my pc, or on my macbook. i have a midi to usb cable that i've successfully installed, and i have an audio cable as well. my sound is integrated into my motherboard (ac97 or whatever) on the pc. what software should i get? i got garage band working on the mac, but i can't get it to play the sounds from my keyboard, only from the garage band instruments when i push keys on my synth. any help would be appreciated. i already read through tweaks guide and it didn't help me that much. thanks in advance.
