Pads.. what?

Hi, I see everyone here talking about Pad sounds and it's really annoying not knowing what everyone here actually means, so if it's possible, I'd like to know what Pads are exactly?

Pad sounds are synthetic sounds usually with a slow attack that fit perfectly as a back ground.
So talking about synth sounds the triton series calls
slow synth (pad): background sounds with slow attack
motion synth (usually pad): sounds that evolves themself in the time
fast synth: souds with hard attack
