I initialized a patch and set OSC1 to Audio in order to process external audio sources through the line input on the back of the R3.

However, I can't seem to figure out how to get the LATCH function to work unless I also turn on the arpeggiator. Are LATCH and ARP directly tied to eachother, or is there some way that I'm missing to get the keys to latch so that I can process the external signal hands free, but without the arp. turned on?

Yes, Latch works only with the arpeggiator, it is not a "key hold".

The R3 doesn't have an envelope follower to trigger notes from the audio in (Radias does) so you'll have to play a key.

Got a sustain pedal? Put a brick on it then hit any key.

Know how to solder? Get a 1/4" plug and wire the tip to the ring, then plug into the sustain pedal jack (this will keep sustain always on).

... or use a normal sustain pedal and set the polarity to the "wrong" value ...

Took a guitar plug



Soldered a wire like so:



Plugged it into the footswitch jack - only thing is you have to remove it and re-insert it for on/off

I may modify it to have a toggle switch

Does the sustain on the R-3 work differently to how it does on say, a piano?
will it not mix all the notes together in a mess like an echo?

this is an old thread, but thought i'd contribute another solution in case anyone searches in the future.

if you want to process external audio through the R3s effects, filters, EQs, ect. without constantly holding down keys, all you have to do is :

scroll to the very last edit page [Pedal/SW] and turn the 3rd knob [A.Sw Pol] from "-" to "+". next time you depress a key it will latch audio-in indefinitely even after you remove your hand.

it only works if you actually switch from "-" to "+".
saving the [A.Sw Pol] setting in the "+" position doesn't work, you must manually switch from "-" to "+".

the fact [A.Sw Pol] lives on the last edit page makes this a very quick and easy operation, because you can twist the page select wheel vigorously without concern for precision and arrive there almost instantly, since it's impossible to overshoot. then turn knob 3 to "+", press a key and bam! you're processing external audio indefinitely, hands free, only a second or two required for the whole operation.

using this method means you don't need to purchase or solder anything, nice!

To "hold" notes on MicroKorg, I've used arp in Trigger mode and maximum Release.
