all the best for the season to all you guys out there
I think I've read all the stuff on the forum and the Korg site about upgrade but I am still a little confused.
Can you upgrade to OS 3.01 from OS 3.00 / Musical Resources 3.00 and Songbook V3 just by loading the OS alone, so that a backup of user data is not required. It tends to suggest this in a couple of places. Anybody done it?

Yes I did it the way you arte suggesting. You can upgrade from OS3.00 to OS3.01 without reloading the Musical Resources 3 file. No user sounds or styles will be altered, but I think any GLOBAL preferences may have to be checked afterwards, I think the OS upgrade modifies some GLOBAL defaults, but I don't remember.
Best regards,

One thing to be careful of and remember....
...please make sure you "re-save" any SOUNDs that use sample RAM as the format has changed in OS3.01 (see the update guide for details)
Korg OS 3.01 Upgrade Manual - Page 13 wrote:New Sound file format
Operating System version 3.01 uses a new format for User
Sounds (this extends to User Drum Kits). After installing the
new OS, please convert all User Sounds created using OS version
from 2.0 to 3.0, making use of User Samples, to the new format.
Here is how to do it.
1. Load a .SET folder containing User Sounds created with OS
version from 2.0 to 3.0. Do not load single Sounds or banks
of Sounds.
2. Press SOUND to go to the Sound mode.
3. Select the first of the User Sounds making use of User Samples.
4. From the page menu, choose the Write Sound command.
5. When the Write Sound dialog box appears, do not make
any change. Press OK to save the Sound to the original
location.
6. Repeat the above procedure with all the subsequent User
Sounds in memory (assuming they are making use of User
Samples).
7. Save all data in the original .SET folder.
The only thing I would recommend (change in the above manual) is that you DO NOT save all data in the original .SET folder - create a new one instead - then you will have the original in tact in case you ever revert to an earlier OS version.
(........AND DON'T FORGET TO RE-CALIBRATE YOUR TOUCH SCREEN

)
