ARE MY 64MB RAM IS DESTROYED?

Post by AVI6520 »

HI, pleas halp me! :( :( :(

In the first time that I am working with sampling, [with the 1.51 OS]
I can not see that I have the 64mb ram, and can not save sampls there!

[THE 256 mb is OK [20 MB SSD of course, are ok to].[be seen in "MEDIA"-Device info...]

"BLA.... BLA.... BLA... "OS AND RESOURCE RESTORE"...."- I HAVE DONE THAT!!! [1.51...]
Is it software or hardware problem?

In -SOUND
-RECORD
-Sampling Info-
In the -"Available Memory" -there is nothing!
"RAM Bank-" is just empty!
"Mono time-0 s."
"Bytes-0"

Is it software or hardware problem?
please, someone there...

Hi Avi,

You asked forum members to help you decide whether your Pa800 has a hardware or a software failure. First some explanation about the hardware:

On the Pa800 the SSD User storage area is a single FLASH EPROM device divided up as follows:

SSD-U - 20 Mbytes considered as a solid state hard disk for the User
SSD-S - Storage for Operating System and Korg Musical Resources
USER PCM - up to 64 Mb of PCM samples (back up storage)

When you turn the Pa800 on, everything from SSD-S and USER PCM is copied from the FLASH EPROM to a single RAM device from which the OS executes and the User PCM samples are read when you play back User Sounds using those samples.

Let me ask you this question - is the OS behaving itself? Does the menu system on screen work? Do the buttons light up when you press them? Do factory sounds play? If the answer is "yes" then the OS is working and this means that both the FLASH EPROM device and the RAM device in the Pa800 are working and so there is no hardware failure.

Now let me ask whether you can play User Sounds that use User PCM samples? Can you Load a new .SET file so that a different set of User Sounds and PCM Samples is used? If so then both the USER portion of SSD FLASH EPROM and the USER portion of RAM memory are both working correctly.

Now, you say there is no USER PCM memory available for you to record onto. I think there are only three possible answers:

a) Your USER PCM space is already full of samples and there will be no RAM available for any more until you free up some memory by clearing the User PCM area.

b) There could a software fault that causes the amount of free memory to be reported incorrectly when in sample recording mode. The relevant question to ask other people is "has anyone successfuly recorded new samples using the Pa800?" I only have a Pa1x so cannot answer.

c) You may have made a mistake.

I leave you to decide which of these it could be. Certainly if you think it is (a) then I would also recommend clearing the SSD memory while reloading a freshly downloaded copy of OS1.51 and Musical Resources 1.5. But you say you have done that. And yet this fixes the problem for everyone else.

If you think it is (b) then you need to check whether any other users have the same problem. If they do then it is a legitimate software fault that needs to be fixed by Korg.

Apart from these suggestions, I'm out of any other ideas, sorry.

Best regards,
Rob

Hi Avi,
when I bought my PA800 , I had to upgrade the operating system to 1.51 & the musical resources to 1.50.

The only thing i have loaded into my PA800 so far is 3 or 4 drum audio drum loops I created from BIAB's Real Drum loops. They only averaged about 1 mb each.
I didn't load the stuff that came on the cd rom ( drum sets or whatever it was)

Currently my Sampling Available is
Mono Time 414
bytes 39764648

Is it possible you already have some pcm user data loaded into your PA??
ie have you loaded user stuff that involved sample data?

Hi guys , I readed many post about the RAM/ROM trubbel.
I think there is something that destroys the RAM, Donno what but its there, So i hope KORG can give us a answear.
I heave a friend, He loaded samples, and than pressed INTRO 1 to makeit Empty and loaded OS plus RES.
Even that did not helped, He returned 800, And they say they will fix it in next month!
WONDER where they will send it, ITALY?JAPAN?
This is stuped but i hope its gonna be ok in the end, it,s nearly 1 years that 800 is out now!
Break the silence KORG please.

When you delete everything you should see 67MB not 64MB.

Hi Avi,

I think it is a software fault given that people with Pa2x are reporting a similar problem in sample edit mode, see:

HI dear rob, :P :D :P :D :P
I'm glad to hear from you,
Thank you.

My problem is that I can not delete anything in the RAM, or open it [like in SOUND-MENU-BASIC-OSC Basic-Rom\Ram there…] there is no access to it.
And certain that the RAM is not deleted when I turn off the instrument, [The option- "PCM Autoload" is set to off!],

I was load up in the past some STYLS that have a user sounds with them [PCM to the user bank], [WITH THE 1.01 OS], [like Styles of Roland from the forum, [for the PA80 that I can use with the PA800!],
Maybe when I loud the new "OS" and "RES" the old "PCM" stayed there, [The "bug"] and there is no link now [in the "RES"] to the program to delete it?

And in my situation-the available memory- "0" bytes available.
I load again the OS and RES 1.5, [And also try from beginning with the 1.1 "OS" "RES" and it is the same problem with the RAM!].

To take the KB back, [And they will send it to the laboratory] it means that I do not have it at least a month! [I am working with it every day!],
And at the end maybe that they will tell me that it is just a bug!?...
[I can wait to the new "OS" if I will know that they will fix it!]

[It is prove that it is correct idea- "The Post subject: Some thoughts that can help all of us with "bugs"". WE HOP THAT KORG will understand that!]

If there was some way to format the RAM, it was very useful to examine problems like that, with out to lose time that no body in KORG will pay for it….

In "MEDIA" I can see only the SSD-U and SSD-S, should I need to see the RAM there?
How can I delete PCM in the RAM if I can not see anything in the user bank? [sound or styles!]

Best regards,
AVI.

Hi Avi,

In the past there were some similar problems with User SSD memory becoming corrupted, and TommyF posted the following suggestion which fixed the problem:

"On the cdrom that came with your Pa800 there is a file called Pa800_os_res_v100.pkg. It contains both the musical resources and the complete preload PCM data. It is a very big file: 126 mb. Try to load this file"

Of course if newer Pa800's have a different system backup file it may be called Pa800_os_res_v150.pkg or something similar.

I think that your USER SSD memory space will become visible again, and then you could reload OS1.51 and musical resources V1.50 afterwards. I have only a Pa1x pro, so I can not do any testing myself. (The same failure does not occur on the Pa1x in sample edit mode, probably because the Pa1x does not store user samples in SSD memory and instead only loads user samples from HD or FD to RAM.)

Although one or two forum members in the past advocated a procedure referred to as "NAND Format" of the SSD memory, Korg have made it clear that such a procedure may void the warranty of your keyboard and therefore it is not recommended.

I also sent a PM to Paolo Tramannoni to ask Korg to investigate. I suggest that users avoid using sample edit mode on both the Pa800 and Pa2x until there is some comment or workaround or new OS release posted by Korg.

Best regards,
Rob

HI,
And thenk you again.

I have done that-[file called Pa800_os_res_v1.01.pkg]- it dos not halp for the RAM.
My problem is with the RAM and not with the ROM [-SSD].
I do not know how to do the NAND Format, and if it is not for the RAM, and work only for the ROM [-SSD] it will not help,

Thenk you very much for halping with the PM to Paolo Tramannoni,
I hop that KORG will do something with it, and fast,

Best regards,
AVI.

Avi,

Can you confirm that you reloaded the file called Pa800_os_res_v100.pkg that was supplied on the CD that came with your keyboard? According to TommyF and other users this is a "special version" file that actually fixes the USER SSD and USER RAM problems.

Did you test the USER RAM and USER SSD memory space at this point, before doing anything else? What did it say?

Thanks,
Rob

Hi AVI,

With respect, you have not understood my earlier post where I explained how SSD User PCM memory (in FLASH EEPROM) and User PCM RAM memory are inter-related. Because data stored in RAM memory disappears when you turn power off, the way the Pa800 and Pa2x work is that User PCM samples are saved in the SSD FLASH EEPROM memory when you do a "Write Sample" from the page menu.

Then when you turn the power off and back on again, the contents of the SSD User PCM memory (in FLASH EEPROM) are loaded by the Pa800 operating system back into RAM again, and are played back from RAM.

The reason that User PCM samples can not be played back from FLASH EEPROM memory is that there is no FLASH EEPROM device that is fast enough for the required PCM playback sample rate, whereas RAM is sufficiently fast.

I took trouble to explain this because if SSD User PCM (FLASH EEPROM) memory is corrupted, then this corruption will also be copied into RAM.

I'm sure that your keyboard fault is because SSD FLASH EEPROM contents have become corrupted and then, when you turn the keyboard on, the corrupted portion of SSD memory is copied into USER PCM RAM which also prevents you from using the RAM memory because the OS mistakenly thinks it is full.

Best regards,
Rob
