Hi Guys, i really dont know much abt the technical side of the R3. Just wondering if somebody could shed some light on using patches with the r3. I really dont know my arse from my elbow when it comes to them! Ive tried reading up on it here, but cant make head nor tail of it.
Im not sure if patches can only be downloaded and used with the korg hooked up to the pc, or if they can be saved onto the r3 itself. when they are saved, do they knock off other presets, and if so, is their a way to save them all?
One other question, in the downloads section, can all the patches for all the other korgs be used on an r3, or does there have to be specific ones?

Sorry about all the questions, as you have guessed im a beginner, but even if somebody could post a url to the absolute beginners guide to using /saving patches on the r3, it would be most appreciated.

I'll try to answer some of your questions. Here goes :

In the R3 you can load/save .R3L files that are R3 Libraries each containing 128 programs. You can also load/save .R3P files that are R3 Program that contain a single program.

To load or save librairies/programs on the R3, you must use the software that came on the CD-ROM with your R3. If you don't have it, you can easily dowload it from the Korg Web site. You must connect your R3 to your computer using a USB wire. A R3P file takes about 2 seconds to load/save. A complete R3L takes about 30 seconds.

When you load a library, you knock all of the presets (overwrite them) from the R3 memory. But don't worry, you can always bring them back, even without a PC, using the RESTORE FACTORY SETTINGS option as described on page 78 of your R3 owner's manual (read it).

When you load a program, you can choose what program this new one will overwrite. By the way, you can load a R3L (library) file on your PC and load only some of the programs in a one by one fashion.

The R3 software is well done and very easy to use.

As for your other question, NO you cannot use other Korg files to load on your R3. Most of the other synths (except for the R3 and Radias) are romplers, meaning that they recreate sounds using wave samples in memory. The R3 (and Radias) do not work in the same way. You have to understand that what you load on most of the synths (Korg and others) are not sound for themselves but rather PARAMETERS that define how a particular sound is produced using the synth architecture. Since most synths have different architecture, the files are not compatible.

Since the R3 is relatively new (about 6 months), there are not many R3L and R3P out there. I'm sure that if we wait a few months, there will be some.

I suggest that you :
1 - Install the software on your PC using the instruction that are on the CD (in the menu at startup)
2 - Read the pages of your owner's manual about this subjects (only a few simple pages to read-15 minutes max)
3 - Look on this forum as there are a few (only a few ) R3L and R3P files that you can download. M. Craig Wilson for instance has created some great sounds! (Search for this name...)
4 - Try to load them on your R3. Don't worry, you won't break anything! And you can always bring back the presets anyway.
5 - Post a reply to tell us how you brilliantly succeeded!

P.S. : A note to DAZ or Sharp, could you please create a R3 section in the download section of the site as the R3 and Radias files are not compatible and since there is only a Radias section. Maybe, this will encourage R3 members to send you R3 files. I'll be one of them. Thanks !

P.S.2 : Daz, we are always waiting for your magic touch to translate the MicroKorg programs to R3 format. And maybe some of the Radias too (the ones that only use 2 timbres or less anyway...).

hey man, many thanks for all your info, it has shed light on the subject. Im in the process of making some tunes down in my mates gaff (have to use his pc as my windows vista dosent allow the korg r3 software to run properly )

I have gone to the download section of the Korg Forum and have downloaded some of the R3 Files and can not open the R3P files in my R3 Sound Editor Program. How do you open them? I can open R3L (Library Files) but not the Program Files.

Any help is much appreciated.

@whitesong - how to load a downloaded program:

1. Make sure you have a library file already open in the Sound Editor (either create a new one or load a library file you normally work from).
2. On the PROGRAM page, select a location where you want to put the downloaded program (example - A1)
3. Right-click (Mac: Control-click) and choose "Open..." on the popup menu.
4. Navigate to where you saved the downloaded program, select it and click Open.

And that's it. You can then transmit it to your R3 etc.

I discovered this by trial and error...then realised it's explained in the Sound Editor manual (section 8 Managing Programs).

@AnthemOfTheSun - I'm running Sound Editor on my Vista PC. Downloaded the latest version from Korg support site rather than using the one that came on the CD and all seems to be working ok (fingers crossed, touch wood, etc etc!)

Thanks for your help, I got.

Also, did you notice on the downloads the Studio F Eminent Zip file has the HyperVoc program file in it. Is that a mistake?
