How to utilize the pad kontrol - what to bind where?

Hi,
First off, let me say I'm a beginner in the music making world. I make mostly trance/techno/the occasional industrial tune, and have been doing so for about a month now. I use Fruity Loops.
My question is, how do I best utilize my Pad Kontrol? What would be good binding the x/y pad to (cutoff, dist, whatever)?
Also, I recently bought a midi keyboard with a total of 17 knobs/sliders. What would be good to bind these to in FL, and what have you bound yours to?
Also I'm wondernig how to maintain my bindings of knobs, x/y pad and sliders after closing FL and opening it again (not having to reassign every time I close FL down and open it agin)?
