Sound quality difference Between 16 bit ,24 bit on 3200

I have a 3200 recorder. Obviously ther a sound difference using 16 bit mode instead of 24 bit. Just recorded some drum samples from Emu Planet Earth and one sound in particular lost the majority of its punch . Very low drum sound ,maybe that's where they saved the bits.
Also there may be something else going on with my Emu box.
