Radias Blew Up...

Post by X-Trade »

well, today I went to start organising and saving patches on my computer.. possibly do a bit of programming too... but this was far from the case.

I turned on the power, and the radias came up with the nice loading screen, (actually) finished loading, and then the screen went blank. this was accompanied by device attached and detached sounds from my computer.

Now i know that its not right for the radias' screen to be blank if the power is on... then I noticed smoke coming from the back of the radias (near where the power cable plugs in). furthermore either this smoke was either red, or was lit from some form of light or fire from within the unit.
naturally i unplugged it, opened all the windows, and turned off everything else before you could even say "fire". luckily it didn't set the fire alarms off...
i tried to move it about 15 minutes later allthough the back of the unit was still quite hot. its fine now... but.. well, I daren't try turning it on.

anyway, possibly interesting story to the side for now, does anyone know exactly how korg returns work? I've only managed to just get on the internet as its been out all day, and the shop where I bought it is closed on wednesdays (not to mention the fact that it is in the middle of nowhere and I don't have immediate access to a car). I'm still quite shocked and upset at this loss. and i've just joined a band and won't be able to use it for now...

should I be contacting the shop where I bought it? or do i go to korg?
and i'm assuming i will be loosing all the nice patches i've written on it... except for the few older backups I have.
I'd also like to know WHY it blew up, considering it is behind surge protection and all..

Sorry to hear that mate ... not nice.

You're back in my old homeland IIRC, so the first thing I'd do is contact Korg UK support :

http://www.korguksupport.co.uk/page.cfm?pageid=331

The Contact option on the right side of the page gives you a couple of options for contacting them.

Good luck with getting it sorted. Sounds like a Voltage Regulator fried or something.

I hate Korg sometimes...

My Radias had a malfunction too - more than 3 months has passed: still can't get it back, loller! (from Official Korg distributor in Holland)

They are lucky that I was kinda busy and already have lot's of other synths, to play with - otherwise, I would sue them
My gear: Roland Fantom x8 - Korg Radias - Access Virus b - Roland Jp-8000 - Moog da Rogue

Good news: I got it back yesterday. aparantly he couldn't figure out why it was damaged, something like a bit of moisture or dust got on the board and caused a slow short.
well, the power supply is broken anyway so still waiting for a new one. luckily I have the TR with identical power supply.. just cant use both together for a while.

oh, and whats even better, my patches are still on there!! so I'll be able to finish my updated patch set for everyone to play with :)

excellent news... with some of the stories of people with a dead Radias I was starting to get a little concerned, especially considering I had an MS2000R I purchased new crap out after only 2 or 3 years. :?

do yourself a favor and save them immediately. They should had replace it with a new one. It is unacceptable just to fix it after the fire. You could sue them and make lots of equipment. We should not tolerate behavior like that . When we give our hard earned money, they should respect that... Thats all. Thanx

Now that I think about it I had a problem with my radias too. It will just stop playing some sounds or it will have them modified by itself. It doesn't do it all the time very rear but it does happen, and when that occurs I am not the happiest man on earth...

Personally I don't think we should tolerate behaviour like that ^^. We don't really know what the problem was anyway, it was probably my fault letting it overheat or something. He said it looked like dust or moisture had got inside and shorted one of the components, causing a slow short. Because it hadn't actually blown the 1amp fuse.
I'd trust them with my gear any day, they seem to be the people to go to in the area, the number of vintage synths they see for repair (they have a fair few on sale too)

well, to be fair, I traded in a Poly800 in less than great condition, and a GT6-B which he admitted himself would be difficult to sell...
and then paid around £300 cash I think. The recipt is floating around somewhere.

the first thing I did when I got it back was back up the patches. But I tend to do a lot of editing on the Radias whilst my PC is offline (I actually find it easier and more fun), and then use the software editor to fill in the names (difficult with the knob problem, and just plain time consuming on the device anyway), and organise my patches.

They're actually getting more of my custom as I'm planning on trading in the controller I currently use with the Radias for a Kawai K1 (It has aftertouch). Nothing less than 61 keys will make me happy.

That is the problem these machine should be able to play for many many hours without overheating. Lets say you played for a few hours and went out to get cigarettes, paper, beer and fire starts when you are away. Than what you are gonna do when you will return and your home is on fire? The same think happened tome with a UPS it started fire and thank god I was there because sometimes I just leave the computer running to download staff. take care Akiss
