I was just wondering if there any any hidden gems for hosting a band site. I have heard good and bad things about myspace, virb, soundclick, facebook...
What would you suggest?

It's really pretty natural to hear good, and bad, about just about any hosting site, but you just cannot argue that the exposure at MySpace is probably the greatest, as far as numbers go.
I've been with SoundClick for several years now, and have like 90,000 hits to my page there, but I truly think, that had I been with MySpace for that long, with my 50+ original songs, there would be a much bigger number, simply due to the traffic there.
That said, I don't like MySpace that much, even though I do go there to listen to independent artists music.
Their reputation is probably the worst, but that's mostly in the preditor/ teenager category.
I like SoundClick, it works for me, and my music, which is not all that mainstream.
Just my $.02

MySpace limits the number of hosted tracks uploaded to 6. While you could link to your other music, that would limit the inclusiveness of the site.
Further there are not charts at MySpace. While I don't give credence to charts on ANY site, it is a great way to get your music heard (people listen to the tops of charts out of curiosity). This is where SoundClick is superior. It also has longevity. I feel if they had been more social at their onset, they would be the artistic version of MySpace. Only recently have the plugged their social circles. Even they are limited as they do not have groups like Facebook offers.
My .02 is to get on every site you can and direct as many people as you know to get them to direct as many people as THEY know to all of your sites. OH...and on every forum where you are a member, make sure your links are in your signature.

Dude, Stephen!!! I just checked out your page man, excellent work there my friend!
I'm definitely impressed... I'd love to play guitar like that....unfortunately I have 3 strikes against me already!
1. I'm left handed haha
2. I play backwards, strumming with my left hand, while holding chords with my right hand but I like the higher octave strings on the top, basically playing a right handed guitar with my left and it doesn't work well...
3. Haven't the funds to pursue lessons.
Anyhow drop by my page and see what you think as well. You'll hear my guitarists pluck away...
Although the track isn't finished yet
