Stereo/cable issues

Post by yoof »

Hi all,

I just bought an EMX-1 and have been having a lot of fun with it - very happy with my purchase :-)

So, this is gonna sound really stupid - please forgive these basic newbie issues. Anyways, my headphones have a switch on them to flick between mono and stereo (and I know they work in stereo, coz that's what I use in my DJ setup). But when I plug my headphones into my electribe's headphone socket, I only get sound in both ears if I switch the headphones to mono. If I switch my headphones to stereo, I only get sound out of the left ear. Is that what's supposed to happen?

The other thing is kind of related I guess... I made a couple of tunes and want to get them onto my mp3 player. I have an external sound card that has a line-in accepting a 3.5mm plug (again, I know this works in stereo, as I use it for my DJ setup). The EMX-1 has two 1/4" L/R output sockets. (Actually, I don't seem to be able to find a cable that goes from two 1/4" plugs to one 3.5mm plug. Does such a thing exist?) Anyways, I tried going from the L output (which can by used for sending mono, I understand) into my soundcard with a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable using a 1/4" adapter. But again, I only get sound out of the left speaker. I guess I expected to hear the mono signal in both speakers, but just not in stereo (eg, no panning effects, etc). Did I misunderstand something? If I want to hear stuff in both speakers, do I need to connect both the L and R outputs into my external soundcard? If so, can someone point me to the correct cable to use?

Any guidance would be much appreciated :-)

You could use an RCA to 3.5mm cable, and two 1/4" tele-to-RCA adapters if you cant find a dedicated cable. I dont know about your headphones

Yes, that sounds like a good plan. I can see those adapters on Juno... I'll order them and see how I go. Thanks.

Still a bit bizarre about the headphone socket on the EMX-1 though... it seems like it's just sending the left channel. Anybody else get that problem?

Do you have another set of headphones to test out?

Recording into a mp3 player is going to sound like crap. Get a audio interface. Record it onto your computer using balanced 1/4 cords. Then put it onto your mp3 player.

Hi Tarekith, yes, I tried some other headphones... still just get sound in the left channel. Nobody else getting that?

I'll have a read up on audio interfaces and balanced outputs. Currently I have an external soundcard (extigy or something, probably fairly outdated).

When you are testing with different headphones, are you by any chance using the same 1/4" to 3.5mm adapter? If so, the adapter is faulty and not connecting the R channel.

The electribes do not have balanced outputs, so balanced cables and inputs are not going to matter. You will get a decent signal from the L/R outputs through tele-to-rca adapters into a stereo 3.5mm jack into your soundcards line-in, or into an mp3 player. No problem.

Hi all, thanks for your replies. In the end I ordered two RCA to 1/4" phono adapter plugs from Juno. They arrived today, but alas, still only getting sound out of one channel (using headphones or connecting the left and right channels to my mixer). I can only assume my machine's a bit broke.

I guess, now I'm pretty glad I shelled out the extra hundred quid to buy it in a shop with a full warranty, etc... phoned them up and they said they'll order me a new one and we can swap them over.

So, for now, I'll continue to compose in mono, which is fine since I still have a lot to learn about composition, etc.

P.S. seems like Sebastiandj in this post has the same issue:

try swapping tubes around. Perhaps one of them has gone.

See if that will change which channel goes out. If it does, get new tubes which you will end up doing anyways.
