Combi Request for Justin Timberlake's "My Love"!

Post by John_J »

Hi, guys! :-) My band might be doing this song some time, and I was wondering if anyone could help me determine if the M50 could do that synth pad with the triplet slicer effect that plays throughout the song.

Here's a vid for quick reference! Thanks in advance!

I'm interested in how this would be done as well!

Thanks!

you mean the sound that starts in the very beginning?
it seems a square/saw based pad with filter/amp envelope triggered by triangle lfo. it's quite common to find similar patch on Virtual Analog synth.

The one that starts 3 seconds into the vid. :-)
Thanks! Wondering if the M50 could pull it off.
Either by arpeggio, some sort of tremolo, or a triplet delay?

i guess it can be done, maybe it 's a little bit more difficult than on a VA since Korg WS have a patch structure that is slighlty different with respect to typical analog or VA synth.

Thanks much! :-)
Any tips on how to create such a combi from scratch?
What should I look for?

in OSC page select either a pure saw wave or a pad wave that you like, then apply a single LP filter (12 db slope), select a "standard" amp e filter envelope, then try to module this envelopes with a triangle LFO enough fast. the decay amp curve should be quite fast so to have amplitude decreasing as the filter opens after the first time.

since Korg workstations have parallel structures for the two oscillators (i.e. osc1>filter1>amp1 and in parallel osc2>filter2>amp2) and not a mixer section before filter and amp as in all analog and VA synth (e.g. osc1+osc2>filters>amp), you should repeat the same for the second oscillator if you want to use it.

LoL im willing to bet thats a stock roland preset. definitely a roland sound. im sure the m50 has something close.

current korg synths: MicroX, ESX (upgraded)

considering: Radias, M3, microkorg, EMX when the price drops

How come you're so sure? :-D

Is it like, one of those Fantom X things?

Or, is it official that JT's band uses Roland?
Back in the N'Sync days, they used a Motif, in fact. :-D

I have this setup in my Korg Triton Extreme.

The person who made the beat ( I forgot his name... Danja?) used a "gated" effect for the stuttering synth. You can find this feature on Novation's Xiosynth, or the VST Vanguard, or program the gate on any synth with a sequencer where you can manually turn on/off the amp for each step.

On the Triton, however, there is no easy sequencer to program to do this, so you have to "fake" gate the sound. The sound is basically any saw pad (find one you like, or program one yourself.)

You can't gate it using an LFO, because the stuttering sound is very beat specific (meaning... it has a definite pattern you can hear... sorta Da Da Da.. Da Da Da...) that is a basic trance pattern that cannot be replicated with a triangle, square wave... etc.

So I basically programmed an arpeggiator that triggers this gated pattern... and then gave a slightly lower attack to give it a fake gated effect (like it was cut off in the beginning).

Hope that helps... not sure you can load a Triton combi in an M50.

As for the Roland... there IS a preset that you can used that utilizes the Step LFO unique to the Fantom... but while it is similar... it definitely doesn't sound right.

DUDE, thanks! :-)
Seems promising because the M50 has dual polyphonic programmable arps. It also definately has the ASDR controls to dampen the Attack.
And tons of saw pads to boot!

How'd you know who made the beat?
I do recall some guy on YouTUBE recreating the beat for Way I R by Timbaland using a software synth like you mentioned, and the beat is pretty much alike to the one on My Love, except for the lead sound instead of a pad, and straight-up in-yo-face attack. :-D

Ok, I've made the Combi! :-D

I used just one Arp with several pads assigned to it.
The arp spans three octaves with the movement being both up and down.
I also assigned a drum track and the 4 chords of the song to the Chord Trigger buttons. Not bad for a guitarist and first time user! :-D
How do I upload the Combi from my M50 to my laptop?
Any site where I can share it with you guys?
