USB

Post by ssan »

Hello,
I have a pa800- the issue I have is the USB host port does not seem to work anymore, either the front or the rear sockets. (it used to work.) When I plug in the USB in to the front socket, the light on the USB pen drive does not turn on. When I press Media button to load files, the USB drive does not show up in the device selection menu. Also, I cannot reset the OS since the USB does not show up to select the OS files upon power up.

also- I did check the USB pen drive itself, it works fine on my PC. Also tried alternate USB pen drives, same problem.

other than that, the keyboard sounds etc. seem to work fine.
any suggestions? thanks

Hi ssan,

If the USB Pen drive has a hidden partition called a U3 partition then it will not work on your Pa keyboard. For example the Sandisk Cruzer USB drives come with U3 technology installed. They provide a tool that you can download from their web site to remove the U3 partition, and if after doing that you reformat the USB stick on your Pa keyboards, then it will work.

Thanks Rob,

I will give that a try. But the problem is this exact same flash drive worked fine before it stopped responding. It never had a U3 partition to my knowledge-- All I did was added some more files and plugged it in. This flash drive is pretty basic 1gb capacity, non descript model (not a san disk .)

do you think there might be a swtich to disable the USB on the keyboard by any chance that I might have accidently turned off?

I will try the U3 stuff anyhow.
thanks

Hi ssan,

There is no software switch to disable the USB port, but a corrupted OS upgrade may prevent the USB from working. If the same USB pen drive worked "before you did x" and now it does not work "after you did x" then what was the event "x"? Have you tried to upgrade the OS or MR?

The thing with U3 partitions on a USB stick is that they prevent an OS upgrade from running properly from the USB stick. However it is possible to see MIDI and other files on the stick. It just fails during OS upgrade.

There indeed is a somewhat unclear ON/OFF button for the USB. Simply click on MEDIA (where you have LOAD/SAVE/COPY etc) and click on the last tab called USB. There you can pick ENABLE/DISABLE.

Change it and check if it works now. I think this is the solution for you.

If still problem occurs try these 2 things:

- Is the write protect tab of the disk in the protect position? Maybe if not it will not be selectable in device pop-up menu ?

- Do you have the Korg USB Midi Driver installed ? If so, there could be a problem there. You can use the USB for midi transfer with your PC, so maybe some configuration there has been changed. Like the CLOCK SEND ON/OFF function in GENERAL CONTROLS (GLOBAL EDIT MODE). (would not be logical, but hey, I am just mentioning it you never know). Or try un-installing it and check if it works again.

I think that ssan's problem relates to the USB type A ports (Master/Host)
and not the type B (Slave/Device) which has the ENABLE/DISABLE switch.

Thanks all for your posts.

Yes, Pete's right my problem is with the USB-F and USB-R ports, not the USB for PC to SSD connection. I did try macboy's suggestion with the USB switch but that did not work. I don't have a midi driver installed, and have never tried that (USB-MIDI.) But you say there is a write protect on the USB pen drive- checked could not find any on it-- or am I not looking properly?

Rob's suggestion with the U3 port. I downloaded a program from sandisk to kill U3 but I think the software did not recognize the USB as a U3 drive, so it did not let me go to the next step. (it prompts to plug in a USB U3 drive.)

Again, the flash I am using worked just fine before (its not a sandisk usb). I tried 2 other flash USBs, both don't work. I tried formating the USB, that did not do it either.

To think back on "x" that Rob suggests, I really did not do much of anything (or so I think).. I usually just leave the USB on the keybord, always connected to the front port. Then one day I decided to add some more karaoke files to the USB (at this point I don't remember if the drive light was on or off) and just pulled out the usb from the keyboard & connected it to my PC.
I then downloaded some .kar files from the internet. This I copied on to the USB drive, and took it back to the keyboard. I then tried to load the files with the media button and that's when I discovered that the USB wasn't being recognized. I had upgraded the OS and MR (latest version) but that was several weeks back, before this USB issue popped up. the trouble now is I can't even reset the OS because it does not recognize the USB upon power up +Intro- so I can't select the drive to install the OS or MR.

thanks
ssan :? any help of course always appreciated.

Hi ssan,

It seems from what you say that after performing the upgrade, the USB drives were working fine for a while, so it is not a software fault or bad OS installation.

The only remaining thing to do is to try one of your USB pen drives in a Pa keyboard at your dealer to see if the data loads OK on a different machine. If it works on a different Pa keyboard, then it does seem that the USB circuitry on your Pa keyboard has developed a fault and the keyboard will have to be sent for repair.

If you feel competent to do this, it may be worth disconnecting and reconnecting both ends of all the ribbon cables connected to the USB i/o board, just in case a connector has become dislodged. But don't do it if your keyboard is still under warranty.

Best regards,
Rob

Ssan,

I assume you formatted each USB flash drive before using it. See Media/Format and the advice thereon in the manual.

Warning--when formatting a device all data it contains is lost forever, so you need to format the device when it is blank.

Sorry, on re-reading your note above I see that you have tried formatting the drives, so you can ignore this contribution.
