Hi All,
I have question regarding on what is the best way to create your own rhythm loop quickly and not use any pc based software to achieve this. I would like to create this on the PA2x. For example lets say I'd like to create a rhythm loop (can be either drums or guitar sound). Which has a rhythm sequence loop of 12 345 12 345 12 345..etc.

From the sequence above it can be translated in guitar strokes:
1 strum down
2 strum up
pause
3 strum up
4 strum up
5 strum up
pause
1 strum down
2 strum up
.. etc
Of course I should be able to control the tempo speed(bpm) & select any chord on the guitar to produce the same rhythm above. Equally I would like to reproduce this rhythm on some drum kit.

I've checked on the forum it suggested to use some pc based s/w to create a style. (seems to be a bit involved and time consuming) I even settle to save the rhythm created on the PA2x and save it as a MIDI file and later replay it as a loop on the pa2x..
Can anybody suggest some hints or tips to achieve this with minimal effort

might have misread what you're trying to do, but have you checked out the "Guitar Mode " function??
It creates strums with a single note.
Recorded onboard in realtime or steptime via the event list editor.

I did this article a while back for another forum


Creating a Guitar Mode Track
1.Press Record
2.Record New Style OK
3.Choose Track ( just say Track 5)
4.Press Menu. Choose Style Track controls
5.Press acc Icon on Track 5 & Choose Gtr
6.Press Instrument Icon & Choose one of the Real Guitars on Page 19 or 20
7.Press Exit

You're Now Ready to Record Variation 1.
You can choose to record your Drums & Bass first.
Either Do it in Realtime or if not proficient use the copy function to
copy bass ,Drum, Percussion tracks or any other you may choose from rom or other User Stylesyou may have.

Recording your Guitar Mode Track in realtime
1.Make sure Accomp 5 is hilighted
2.Choose the length & Cv length of the track, 2bars, 4 bars whatever,
Choose the tempo & the meter & turn Metronome on or off,whatever suits.
3.Press start stop button & Start recording. When finished press stop.
It will keep looping & recording additioal notes till you press stop.
4.Press start button & what you've recorded will play back.
If you're not happy with it,touch icon rh top of screen Press Delelete Current Track
or Press Write Style if you are.
5.If you've messed up 1 or 2 notes Press Menu Button & Event Edit .
Here you can fix a individual strum by changing the note, ( Value 1)
changing the velocity ( value 2) Insert additional notes or delete notes.
You can Quantize. Menu , Style Edit Quantize.
When finished Press Exit to get back to main recording page & Press Write Style.


What Notes to Record??
Page 6 Operating System 1.51 Manual ( PDF that came in the upgrade Folder) Print it if you haven't done so.
This Page explains the various notes
The Lowest Octave on the PA800 has the majority of the Strums
C2 (the lowest note on the keyboard ) is a Full Down Strum
A2 is a 4 note down strum.
Just play around with them to get the feel.

Next Octave up is the single Guitar Strings & a couple of more Strums.
Just play around with them to get the feel.
One fairly important one is the F#3 , if a chord or note is ringing out for too long,
if you insert an f#3 it will mute the notes.

This will get you started with some simple strums & notes.

For more advanced recording you can choose & record your own RX noises & you can select a capo.
( Still not 100% familiar with these functions).


Next Choosing a Key/Chord etc is only used if recording an Intro or Ending that has a Chord Progression in it
( ie Intro1/Ending 1 ).

This is really a great way to start experimenting using
the korg's guitar mode and it s exactly what I need.

So as far as drums are concerned you suggested to copy this from the factory samples. But how do you modify these drums so that it corresponds to my own rhythm/beat? (assuming not using the reatime playing approach)

But I'll definitely try out your step by step procedure to get at least the guitar mode to run soon.

If you can find a factory style that its drum track is close to what you would like to create, then you can copy that and then move things around to your liking. That'll save you some time. If you really want to come up with your own patterns, then you should spend some time to understand the factory styles. Once you get a hold of it, then you can make this keyboard to do what you want.

probably Sam's approach would be best. Find something similar & edit.

You can edit in the "Event List" Editor. ( press Menu Button, Event Edit)
You can alter drum notes, you can alter the timing & the velocities.

You could even build up a pattern from scratch putting in one note at a time.
Press insert
A C4 note pops up on measure 1.
Alter the measure, the note & the velocity to suit your pattern.

Below only applies to an emptypart or style. You can then copy the drum pattern into an existing style part.

If your pattern is repetative, you could create a 1 bar drum pattern.
Create your 1 bar drum pattern in event list edit
WRITE STYLE & EXIT to Play Mode

Press Record
Edit Current Style ( Drum pattern style)

On the the main style creation page & at the top you'll see
Rec Length 1
CV Length 1
Change the CV & Rec lengths ( in that order) to 2 or 4 or 8, whatever length pattern you want, & it does an automatic copy of the bars. Go back to your event list edit & alter any drums that you choose to maybe vary it slightly.
Write Style
If your pattern is based on 2 bars( that differ), create the 2 bars & use the above copy function to make it 4 or 8 etc

After you finish your drum pattern, copy it into another style part or record the rest of your tracks.

This 1 bar pattern maybe could be used for fills & endings as well by just altering some notes. Might save you recording every single note from scratch.

Before you go recording 4 different drum variations try this.
In play mode
Press Menu
Style Controls
Drum Mapping
Assuming you've created Variation 1 first
press start play button
and scroll thru the 7 Drum Mapping options
Each of the options alters certain drum types.
If you get enough variety from the various options,
you could just create the one drum pattern,
copy it to each of the 4 variations, set the drum mapping for each variation.
Write to "Current Style Performance".

there is apparently also a step edit mode, ( came across it in the manual this morning) unfortunately it's not something I've tried , though does look interesting & something I'll be checking into.
