noobie question, 2 voices at same time?

And by that I mean I'd like to have a flugel horn and a violin at the same time but also separated in stereo so each voice comes out separate sides.
I'm asking prior to delving into the manual so if it's not possible i won't try.

Sure you can, this is very easy to accomplish in combination mode (see combi C128 for a starting point).

There is no Combi 128...;>)
But page 65 of the manual shows how but it doesn't work...;>(
Only the first voice sounds.

To activate the second sound go to 'Timbre param' and set the MIDI Status for the second timbre from 'OFF' to 'Int'.

I followed the manual directions on page 60-65 with no luck starting with Combi C:127.
Only the first 'sound/voice' I used plays.
I'm trying to get Prog:D102 Few Bows Here (a solo violin sound) and Prog:D054 French Horn Section to play at the same time and over the entire keyboard (layered).
I'm not a keyboard player but I'm adding orchestral sounds to my tunes and I figured if I can play once and get 2 sounds...;>)

I think in combi mode the default combi has the different timbres set to different channels.
you need to reassign your second timbre (in the MIDI page) to GCH or 01 instead of whatever number it might be (i think by default it has T1:01, T2:02, T3:03, etc)
GCH (default 01) will be the global channel which is the main channel that your keyboard is transmitting keyboard and controller changes on, so if you want a program to sound it needs to be set to respond to that channel. the other channels are handy when you're linked to a computer or external keyboard(s) to play different sounds from a sequencer or multiple controllers.
MIDI has up to 16 channels.

I'm not doing anything with midi or a computer...;>)

I wasn't suggesting you are. just explaining the purpose of it.
The point is that the tracks I believe are by default assigned to different channels.
you need the tracks you want to use to be assigned to GCH (all the way past 16), or to '01' (might show as '01G') assuming you haven't changed the default channel.

I believe a combi has all parts set to 'Gch' by default.. it's just that parts 2 through 8 are turned off. See my post above on how to enable them.

here is a list of things to check:
- in PRM1: MIDI tab, are both timbres set to INT, Gch
- in KeyZ: Key tab, are both timbres set to (for starters anyway): G9, C-1
- in main(play): Mix tab, are the levels for both timbres set to something you can hear (e.g. start off with both of them at 100 or 127, before making adjustments to get the resulting sound you want)
- in IFX: Bus tab, are both timbres set to 'IFX' or L/R' NOT 'off' (By the way, this is where you can start to set up effects for your combi. programs in your combi won't have any effects that they have in their original programs because there are only 1IFX and two MFX)
- also check in VelZ: Vel tab that both timbres are set to (for starters) 127, 001.
failing all that, make sure that the two programs do actually sound on their own in program mode!

Yes to all above - by default it seems. And yes, the individual programs sound on their own but I still only hear the 'first' sound and when I 'swap' the 2 sounds, then only the 2nd sound is heard - or any other sound I dial in at the first timbre location.

well it seems odd - it certainly SHOULD work. something must be missing.
It works for everyone else, and I can't imagine that any kind of fault could manifest itself some way.
you are working in combi mode right? not multi mode?
do all of the preload combis operate as expected? for example 'stereophonic keys' - do you hear a piano AND strings? (I think that combi is on the MicroX and X50).
if all else fails, you could always alter a combi such as that one to make the kind of sound you want.

Yup, I'm in COMBI mode and all the sounds work normally. This is my first attempt to delve into the programming. I went through C:003 Wonka ville and changed the first 2 timbres to Prog D:102 Few Bows Here (Timbre #1) and Prog D:054 French Horn Section (Timbre #2) and (I think) correctly zeroed out the rest of the active Timbres, unchecked all the existing Midi boxes and effects and was left with Timbre #1's 'Bows' sound.
I swapped Timbres 1 & 2 around and only got the Horns.
Also, when I set the individual Timbres to hard pans (and in this case i can only hear T1) I still hear the voice in both sides of my headphones albeit it's much more stereo separated instead of being on one side.
Would I be better off trying this via the Editor?

Here's what I have done on the X50 and opened and saved in the editor:
http://home.comcast.net/~castle.walls/jimsx50sound.Xall
p.s. Combi 127 Init.Combination
p.s. part 2: while using the editor, is it possible to hear the synth via headphones plugged into the computer?
