On Page 42 of the editing options on the R3, the third knob has a "routing" option. Choices are "MIDI + USB", "MIDI", "USB"
I'm not sure if this is the answer you are looking for exactly. I'm not sure I completely understood your problem.

Remember that you won't hear any audio through the USB, you still need to hook up audio cables. the USB and MIDI connections are only for MIDI note on/off, controller change, and other data.
so you need an audio interface or soundcard in order to get the sound into your computer, or just plug in monitors or phones in order to hear the R3 play.
to get MIDI notes from your sequencer to play the R3, you need to set the MIDI output to R3 SND (i.e. sending it to the SouND generator in the R3).

To all those new purchasers having sound issues w/ R3 and computer...
1. The USB from the R3 sends only the key notes to the sound card, but does not send synthesizer info. It will sound like regular piano keys, unsynthesized. In order to get synthesized sound to computer, you must hook up an audio cable...
2. If you hook up an audio cable (phones on R3, to your computer's microphone input), you will need to unplug the USB. The reason for this is the R3 will be sending two signals through your sound card, one from the USB and one from the phones out. By unpluging the USB, and having the phones out going to the computer mic input, you will get the correct synthesized sound.
I was confused at first why I couldn't get synthesized sound to my computer via the USB (you can't), then confused why I was getting feedback when I plugged in my audio cable (because USB and phones both had signals).
This was a bit of pain to figure out...would have been nice if this was in the manual...saved me some grief...hopefully this message will help others avoid the issue, or fix it for them.
Thank goodness for forums...lol.

korger22,
Unfortunately, you are still confused and the information you provided was entirely wrong. The R3 USB connection sends no audio whatsover, none, nada, zippo, nunca. You should also not be hooking up the computer to the phones output: those are for headphones. The R3 has output jacks for that: L/Mono and R line outputs.
You don't understand the difference between midi and audio. At no time do you need to disconnect the USB when the audio is hooked up. USB on the R3 has nothing to do with audio. You can't get audio feedback through the R3's USB connection.
If you only have USB hooked up to your computer and no audio connection, you will hear no sounds coming from the R3. Any sounds you hear will be due to the built-in default midi synthesizer on the computer responding to the midi note on/off messages over the USB. You are hearing audio ONLY from your computer, the R3 is only triggering the notes.
